Submitters note - SPOILERS for One Piece’s latest manga chapter
We all joked about the "Netflix Curse" and their legendary ability to hit the "Diversity Slider" on every character they touch. We laughed when we saw the Live Action casting, thinking, "Okay, it’s just Netflix being Netflix."
But guys, we were wrong. It’s not just the Live Action anymore. It’s a full-blown infection.
The latest leaks about Imu-sama having a dark skin tone prove one thing: Netflix has successfully infiltrated Oda’s studio. I can literally see the meeting in my head:
Netflix Exec: "Listen, Oda-san. We’re spending $17M per episode. We can't have the final villain be just a pale shadow. It doesn't track with our 2026 marketing strategy."
Oda: "But he's been a mystery for 20 years..."
Netflix Exec: "Make him tan. Give him that 'Golden Hour' glow. We need him to look good in 4K HDR. Save us the casting headache later."
At this point, the "Netflix Adaptation" meme has come full circle. Usually, Netflix changes the source material to fit their vibe. This time, they changed the source material so they wouldn't HAVE to change it later. That is some 200 IQ foreshadowing right there.
Luffy isn't fighting for freedom anymore; he’s fighting to keep his character design from getting "optimized" by a streaming algorithm. Oda, blink twice if the Netflix producers are in the room with you right now.
TL;DR: Netflix’s diversity quota is so powerful it traveled through time to influence Oda's pen, making Imu-sama dark-skinned in the manga just to save them a casting meeting for Season 15 of the Live Action.
