"I didn't choose to be gay the same way you didn't choose to be straight." Jacob Cain
This argument is often used by homosexuals to try and justify their lifestyle. It says that they had no choice in the matter.
However, the "straight and gay" comparison is not a legitimate comparison. The correct (and biblical) comparison is "I didn't choose to be gay the same was you didn't choose to be an adulterer."
The Scriptures warn that adulterers, homosexuals, and fornicators will not inherit the kingdom of God. Adultery, homosexuality, and fornication are sins in God's eyes (see 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).
Being "straight" is not.

@midnightcyn, I think you are dead wrong on that assertion. There is nothing "modern" about homosexuality. True, in many of the former eras it was not TALKED about, and in others it may have been so common that it merited no commentary.
"The correct (and biblical) comparison is "I didn't choose to be gay the same was you didn't choose to be an adulterer." "
Let me rephrase this a little so that it makes sense:
"The correct comparison (because I made it and I'm never wrong) is "I didn't choose to be gay the same way you didn't choose to make choices which benefit you personally to the detriment of other people." ...wait."
Ray continues to choose to be deceitful in order to sell crap pamphlets and DVDs to feeble-minded people who want simple answers to complex issues.
A legitimate comparison is "A gay person doesn't choose to be gay, the same way Kirk Cameron doesn't choose to be a drooling idiot."
"The Scriptures warn that adulterers, homosexuals, and fornicators will not inherit the kingdom of God. Adultery, homosexuality, and fornication are sins in God's eyes."
What does the bible say about liars, Ray? You know, all liars, which includes "Liars for Jesus"? (see Leviticus 19:11, Revelations 21:8)
You lie to people all the time to sell your videos and books, you lie about what science says, and you intentionally misrepresent other people's beliefs so you can make money. Those are all sins in god's eyes, aren't they, Ray?
Fuck the BuyBull, we're talking cold, hard facts here.
He didn't choose to be gay the same way I didn't choose to be straight.
He didn't choose to be an adulterer the same way I may or may not choose to be.
But fuck that, we're all somewhat bisexual in a way, and I doubt that neither of us hasn't committed "adultery in his heart."
I think I understand the thought process behind Ray Comfort and other similar troglodytes who always claim that homosexuality is a choice. Apparently, they think homosexuality (and by extension heterosexuality) is defined through actions, not desires or attractions. So if a gay man stayed in the closet and married a woman, he'd be heterosexual according to the fundie definition. This is obviously stupid and wrong, but it's the only explanation I can think of where "choosing to be gay" makes any sort of sense.
Aside from being tremendously stupid, I find it's also tremendously hateful as it implies they could just as easily "choose to be straight". "Just ignore all your preferences and desires and wants and all these things that form a fundamental part of your personality and what makes you unique as person. They don't matter in the slightest and I think they're icky, so just do the opposite! It's easy!"

Ok, I think I see what Ray is getting at here. Basically, Ray likes to quote Jesus saying that if you even think for a second anything sexual outside of marriage, that's all the excuse he needs to send you to the Ministry of Love. It's part of his usual schtick that we've all heard thousands of times. Ray is saying that everyone commits sexual sin all the same.
What Ray is deliberately ignoring here (he has a habit of that) is that his deity is essentially setting people up to fail by wiring their brains to react a certain way in certain situations, and then blaming the victims of his hissy fits.
By the way, has anyone noticed that some of the more articulate fundamentalists are starting to somewhat change how they address homosexuality? I've noticed that some are acknowledging that homosexual attraction is not chosen, and they immediately follow up with "oh, but everyone has original sin, yours is just manifesting in a different way is all". I believe that Doctor Doom of Where Liberty Dwells is one example of this.
I am straight as a ruler, and I cannot just choose to find men sexually attractive.
If I could, then being gay would be a choice.
The Scriptures warn that adulterers, homosexuals, and fornicators will not inherit the kingdom of God. Adultery, homosexuality, and fornication are sins in God's eyes (see 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).
He says this like it'd matter...
"they think homosexuality (and by extension heterosexuality) is defined through actions, not desires or attractions. So if a gay man stayed in the closet and married a woman, he'd be heterosexual according to the fundie definition."
Spot on.
Same as if a straight man went to prison for years, did some man on man sex in there because of lack of women and started having sex with women again after being released. Fundies would say that he went from heterosexual to homosexual back to heterosexual and use him as evidence that "being gay is a choice."
Ah, Ray Comfort. The guy who cannot win any argument without turning his opponent into a blatant strawman and putting false words in their mouths. Yet he still considers it a legitimate "victory".
Ray, Straight and Gay are very legitimate comparisons, as they're both, alongside Bi and Asexual, the 4 possible options of a sexual orientation.
They cannot be compared to adultry or fornication at all. Straight people are just as likely to commit adultry as gays. Is it too much to ask that you actually make a little bit of sense?
Hey Ray. You think you're getting into heaven and we ain't? What about Roman 3:23, John 8:7 and Matthew 7:4?
Yeah, see you in hell, ya chump.
What you just was one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. Everyone in this room, is now dumber, for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Get used to that quote, commenters, I'll be using it a hell of a lot.
Confused?
