The two cases that divorce is allowed are marital unfaithfulness and desertion. Abuse is not listed as one of the reasons to divorce, this is why you really have to know your spouse beforehand.

Why don't we do an experiment. Find a random man, get him to seem all nice towards you, then once you're married start beating you. See what you do then.
(disclaimer: of course, I wouldn't actually do this)
Of course, she ignores the parts of the bible that claim NO divorce is allowed.
"you really have to know your spouse beforehand."
Absolutely true, but if the spouse you knew beforehand turns into a violent bastard, you should be allowed a divorce. Yet another reason religion ought to go.
Whenever I see posts like this I wonder where the brothers and fathers are. If you married and then hit my sister you wouldn't have to worry about divorce, because I would kill you. Okay maybe not kill, but force you to leave the state under penalty of death.
Hmmmm, just like baby alligators, Aesmael.
They might be cute when they're little, but it's a felony to flush them down the toilet when you get sick of them.
What a moron! The only people I would think would say this are brainwashed people or rapists. She also says that your not alowed to live with someone before your married because others might think your having sex, how the hell are you going to know if someone is not going abuse you unless you live with them!
As I've said elsewhere-
In Mormon theology, it is *perfectly acceptable* to seek a divorce to end an abusive relationship.
Not only that, but the abusive partner faces excommunication. Not only does that mean being kicked out of the church, it also means that all ordinances the person had performed on them have instantly been voided.
As far as unfaithfulness - in this situation, the clergy are advised to urge reconciliation and counseling.

I would estimate that approximately 10% of the state of Utah is related to my family in some fashion. As such, if anyone attempted to abuse a member of my family then they would indeed have to leave in a hurry.
If I weren't a higher form of life than you, I might just wish you'd end up in the position of biblically illegal divorce or stick with an abusive husband. But I wouldn't wish that on anyone. And if you were as all-loving, all-nuturing as the Bible tells you to be, I don't believe you would either.
how stupid! if a fucker is beating you, you're gonna get out of that and you should! nobody should deal with being abused.
just curious though- if a woman abuses a man, can HE get a divorce according to them?

Well, a woman who strikes a man is too be put to death, so...
Yes, because there's no way that the spouse could do a Jekyll and Hyde routine, in which they're all friendly and caring while you're dating and then transform into Dracula once you're married. "Until death do us part," indeed.
God: Sorry, sweetcheeks, as the victim this is kinda your fault. Now I gotta go, Satan and I have a bet about this guy named Job and it's gonna be hilarious!
Confused?
