I'm thinking about developing a safety fuse for mine...
If you incorporate your dial in a rheostat, and have a normal fuse connected to the circuitry and the main power for the unit, in theory it will turn off before any critical damage occurs. It's still vulnerable to massive instantaneous spikes though and I'm going through several feet of fuse wire a week on this site!

NotMe, the trouble then is that you can't get a good reading on spikes. Better to build a divider circuit and feed in an attenuated signal. That's what I did with mine.
