And junkie's are not obnoxious? The prisons are filled with two kinds of people, the ones that were addicted to drugs and the sex offenders. If it were not for drugs, sex and rock & roll the prisons would not be near as full of people as they are now.

@Berny
He forgot to mention that prisons are also filled with born-again Christians.
What does that say about Christianity?
Very interesting. I don't find myself disagreeing with the idea, but do you have any references?
<<< The ratio of religous to atheist in the american prision system is identical to the the ratio in america. (Anyone able to find this source? I lost it.) >>>
Actually, everything I've heard suggests that atheists are under -represented in prisons. Then again, I've also heard that many inmates convert while in prison, so it's possible that the ratios are about the same as the general population (or at least closer) at the time of the crime.
I guess fundies still believe that rock 'n roll is the music of the Devil... Reminds me of the oldest boy of the village's Jehovah Witnesses family, who was persuaded that it was true. For all I know he may still believe it. The only smart one in his family was his big sister (who was in my class), and when she turned 18 she left so fast their heads were spinning for weeks. ^^
If it weren't for stupid laws against personal decisions that don't affect others, the prisons wouldn't be anywhere near as full as they are now. Drug laws are the best example of this.
I can't say that I disagree with you, but... The main problem is that hard drugs can mess you up pretty badly, and this in turn can affect others: for example diminished abilities can mean you're no longer able to do your job (victims: coworkers, boss). I let you imagine the possible consequences of driving under the influence (even just a joint can dull reflexes just enough). Drugs and family also tend to be bad mix, between the parents having to care for a junkie kid, the junkie parents unable to take care of their kids, the risks for the baby in the womb, and so on...
I have nothing against a moderate, responsible use of drugs (not my thing personally, but..), and if people want to fuck themselves up or kill themselves, it's their choice, but as I said the potential for collateral damages is there. Of course, criminalizing drugs results in high prices, which in turn can force the junkie to resort to crime to feed his habit...
Adrian - criminalizing drugs forces the price up in a surprising number of ways, as well as having a number of other effects which actually do more harm than good. I don't like drugs one bit, and I fully understand the concerns of those who want drugs banned entirely, but a hard line does not good to anyone.
First of all, it makes it hard for people to get treated if they're fearing jail. Second, there are I believe an average of six people or groups in the chain between growing the opium in Afghanistan and selling the heroin in London. All wanting their cut. And because it's hard to produce stuff, and there's a risk, nobody makes weak drugs - they make strong stuff. During prohibition in the US nobody made a gallon of beer, good for a couple of people, they made a gallon of the real hard stuff that can melt your eyes out, because it could serve thirty people.
Realistically, it doesn't work. Even with the most totalitarian states on earth, there are black markets. If someone wants something enough, they will get it. And people do want drugs, whether we like to admit this or not - the question is simply whether we deal with that in an effective manner which recognizes that people have jurisdiction over their own lives, or an ineffective one which says people must do what the government thinks is best.

Back to the topic at hand! xD I have to admit, despite the dire state of our modern prison systems (Both the UK and US), I'm fairly certain there are still quite a number of people in there for murder, rape, theft, burglary, fraud, and plenty of other stuff.
<<The prisons are filled with two kinds of people, the ones that were addicted to drugs and the sex offenders.>>
So which group does MR. Hovind fall into?
I guess murder is just a midemeanor now. People have been doing drugs for centuries...ever hear of opium dens or laudnum?
Failure, and probably a Poe to boot.
Hmmm...last time I checked, any prison I've heard of is full of innocent, god-fearing Christians that were wrongfully convicted. Seriously, ask any inmate. No one is guilty in a prison. Live and learn, I guess.
If it were not for drugs, sex and rock & roll the prisons would not be near as full of people as they are now.
Yeah, but,
Sex and drugs and rock & roll,
Are all my brain and body need.
Sex and drugs and rock & roll,
Are very good indeed!
Jailhouse Blues?
Yea, yea. Bad puns.
Confused?
