I know where you're going, and the reason the Bible mentions sanctions for slaves and masters is that the Bible does indeed allow slavery under certain circumstances. All slavery is not immoral, contrary to the atheistic and unitarian doctrines of nineteenth century abolitionism.

X = X + 1
Rape apologists are some of the worst people I can think of (behind murderers, actual rapists, genocidal dictators, and basically anyone who has committed a felony, but I digress...), but slavery apologists are a close second.
Slavery is not allowable . I don't care if the Bible said it, or if God himself came down, plopped down on your couch, cracked open a cold one and told you to go put some people in chains. It's morally and spiritually wrong to treat any human being, or any living creature for that matter, a nothing more than an object. Even dogs deserve better.
Can't we put birth control hormones in these people's water supply or something? These fundie nutters are probably the greatest threat to freedom in the US. They so perfectly fill the same role as the Taliban in Afghanistan or the Lord's Army in Uganda.
Seriously... these religious fanatics can and do justify any and every abomination in the name of their bible. There's no reasoning with them, so they're NOT going to change their minds. Shouldn't these fascists be rounded up and put somewhere before they start blowing things up on a large scale? It's only a matter of time before we have weekly OKC-style bombings in this country.
Nah, no sane reason to encourage the persecution mentality of the fundies, Vyoma. It'd go against the ideologies of freedom of speech and religion, something that must be granted even to those who wish to see these liberties removed.
Putting birth control hormones in their water wouldn't stop them from blathering, just from reproducing.
The suggestion was intended humorously, if a bit wishfully, in any case.
How about allowing slavery only in the circumstance that people (edit. both participants) think it's okay to do? edit. I just read this back and what I was trying to say was in a s&m, b&d kind of thing, ummm.....can I start over?
In exactly what context is slavery not immoral?
There are passages in the Bible which speak of persons selling themselves into slavery, however, a society in which selling one's self into slavery is one's best choice is immoral and disfunctional.
MK, not true. That's just another fundie deliberate misinterpretation.
In mosaic times, generally you'd just get another wife and ignore the one you didn't like. However, if you really wanted you could tell her to fuck off. You could even say she wasn't a virgin when you married her and the town would stone her to death unless the father could produce blood stained wedding sheets.
It got a little more complicated later when Jesus and co were trying to pin anything and everything from lustful thoughts to remarriage down to adultery. Of course a lot of this was the batshit insane Saul of Tarsus. about the only case of remarriage that wasn't considered adulterous was if the woman had committed adultery, the man wasn't considered to be adulterous if he remarried, and most of that was probably editing down the line.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
