If evolutuion is true- and the earth has been around for billions of years and humans have evolved from very primitve beings, why are there still babies born with abnormailities. Beings evolve to adapt and become more advanced than their ancestors. So, evoluiotn has had billions of years to get this right- yet still there are deformalities, people with genetic diseases. Just wondering how people would respond to what I feel is a strike towards evolution. (BTW- I am a teacher - I have had to teach evolution as a theory- which is in fact what is it). Also, if we evolved from ape like beings- why are they still here?

The abnormalities argument stems from the basic mechanism of evolution: mutation. Some mutations are good, which can lead to useful evolution. Most mutations are bad, leading to defects that range from unpleasant to fatal. Those with the defects generally do not pass them on, and so evolution plods on its merry way.
If creationism is true- and the earth has been around for thousands of years and humans were made in their current form, why are there still babies born with abnormalities. Humans now are the same as their ancestors. So, god has had thousands of years to get this right- yet still there are deformities, people with genetic diseases. Just wondering how people would respond to what I feel is a strike towards creationism. (BTW - I am not a teacher - I'm not an idiot though, and can spell and think for myself- which is in fact what I do.) Also, since we didn't evolve from ape like beings, but were created fully formed, why aren't we perfect right from the start?
Way No, Heather.
If the perfect God, omniscient, omnipotent and omni-benevolent, created man in his image, why is not every man perfect? Can't God get it right?
Beneicial mutations are the fuel of evolution, but most mutations are not beneficial. These non-beneficial mutations are removed from the gene pool by natural selection. Over time, each beneficial mutation retained in the gene pool is a step in evolution.
It is an embarrassment to our society that one so ignorant is (or claims to be) a teacher.
What does this alleged individual teach? She obviously has no understanding of science, so Heather isn't a science teacher. She didn't manage to get a single sentence correct (what the hell are "deformalities," anyhow?), so I assume she doesn't teach English. I actually do tutor English for a program at my university, and there's no way I would have ever let this go out the door... it's as bad as any kid I know in danger of flunking their first composition class.
Maybe Heather is teaching a homeschool class on how to be functionally illiterate?
My understanding of the subject is not that great, my having chosen to follow a path in life unconnected to biology, but wouldn't evolution be impossible without the possiblity of abnormalities? That said, I heard once (could be dead wrong) that a number of forms of birth defects are not directly related to genetics - it was a while ago, I forget the details. Can someone enlighten me please? Either way, it refutes this post.
It would appear heatherwayno has the same qualifications to teach that Kent Hovind possesses, that is, none .
If I had teachers that inept at my children's school, I would labour night and day to get them fired, or at the very least reassigned to a post where they could do no harm, like cleaning the toilets.
Also, if we evolved from ape like beings- why are they still here?"
Apparently it's because creatures only evolve when conditions are appropriate or necessitate that they do. Can't back that up with any evidence, but it's what I've heard anyway.
<<< why are there still babies born with abnormailities. >>>
Because those "abnormalities" are the basis from which natural selection works. The majority of them aren't particularly useful (in fact, a lot are harmful). But once in a while, you find one that provides an advantage.
<<< So, evoluiotn has had billions of years to get this right >>>
You assume that what's "right" is constant. The environment changes, and what works best in the environment we have changes as a result.
<<< Also, if we evolved from ape like beings- why are they still here? >>>
If you are older than 10, have taken a biology class, and can still ask this question with a straight face, you are too stupid to be educable.
Ok, this putz is making me embarassed to be a teacher. We need to find where this person is teaching and rescue those young minds from someone who is teaching them material they know jack about...
We did NOT evolve from "ape-like beings." "Ape-like beings" (by which I assume they mean apes, because when you get right down to it, humans are ape-like beings, too) and humans evolved from a common ancestor.
Sheesh. People who don't know science shouldn't teach it.
Jezebel, you are wrong when you say that there are no "certificate(s) nor any formal training in education...required to "teach" at a christian school."
To be accredited by the state, a Christian School must provide documented proof that the instructors possess the appropriate degrees and qualifications. Although it is true that some states allow a "non-tax" certificate (NT Cert) for teachers that does not require them to take the state accreditation test, to get the NT Cert, an applicant must have a degree in the appropriate discipline from an accredited university, and must make the same effort to keep their degree current as any other teacher in the state.
But....to be honest....there are an increasingly alarming number of Christian schools that are ducking this by simply not beoming accredited, and slipping their graduates through under a loophole in the homeschooling laws. It's kind of sad.
For those who are interested. heatherwayno is an "insturctional assistant working with pre-K, Kindergarden and special ed.", which means she is NOT a teacher, and doesn't even need to have teaching credentials. But that's pretty obvious from her post, I think :P
See, this is just typical Christan arrogance. "We are the best. We are the prime. Everyone needs to be as us."
Listen, bub, do you *really* think that with the billions of specimen evolution has brought up, humans are it's perfection? We are just one number in that endless line. Just because we are smarter than apes doesn't make us better in the eyes of evolution. Just different.
Don't believe me? Go over to evolution. It's sitting there on the park well, relaxing. But DON'T dare to come to me crying when it tells you "Who the fuck do you think you are that you mean you are so special, little man? Now get the hell away from me while I give eagles sharper eyes than you, dolphins the ability to put their brain parts into sperate sleep, dogs better nostrils than you could ever dream of and lend an elephant more strength in it's trunk than you have in your entire body, puny little fleshloaf."
Who let this person teach evolution in school, when s/he so clearly has no grasp of the concept?
Edit: Oh, so she isn't a real teacher? That's a relief. Still, the level of ignorance displayed here is terrifying.
I have actually had teachers who were this ignorant and proud of it, but thankfully not many (and always easily recognizable as such). I'm sure that when she says she teaches evolution as a theory that she means she tells the kindergarten kids, over and over, that evolution is JUST a theory -- which is certainly not teaching anything, just brainwashing them. In any case, this is a really depressing post.

FARKING EH! This post sums it all up. If these are the type of asshats we have teaching our children, its no wonder they grow up unable to comprehend reality. Suddenly, the success of Dr Dino makes a lot more sense.
If we were created by an all-knowing, all-loving, perfect god, then why would babies still be born with abnormalities?
How do you explain your abnormality, heatherwayno?
um...............
just maybe?
because we are a relitivly large gene pool, but its so large that you dont know who has been mixed with who. its loike taking one grain of sand from each beach in the world, with its own kind it maybe be awesome to behold, when alone, each grain doiesnt matter, but when you put them together, it could come up with someting differnt (maybe malformed looking) each time
sides, you wanna know what 'god' does? he lets us have drugs and alcohol and hey, that litle thing called free will that lets people murder and rape eachother!
next time you people see a wild animal raping or murdering for the hell of it, let me know
oh of course deformalities
yes and there are still de'protocols, d'etiquette, de red tape, netty netty bowl bowl.
What a load of snot.
Please STOP teaching. You aren't really qualified, even if you have a paper some school gave you.
Evolution requires mutation, and had you been paying attention in class, or had read a bit on your own, you would know this.
meh i have to admit that this specail ed techer is rite. this is a big strike against evolution and shows it to be just a silly theory made up by satan. all true christans konw that it is a fact that GOD created humans to be superior beings over all the ape like ones. and that having abnormailities, deformalities and genetic diseases proves this. this is what real godly scinece is all about.
Heather (heatherwayno) is hot! As far as I am concerned, she can say whatever she wants about evolution. She has earned that right by being hot! As a very wise man once said, "There is nothing more important in this world than being hot!"
I love how she used that old "evolution is just a theory" argument. If she can't tell the difference between a theory and a hypothesis, she has no business teaching science to turnips, much less children.
Tina, I beg to differ.
Evolution is a fact AND a theory. Like the original poster, you seem to not understand what a theory is. A theory is not an unproven, untested idea; that would be a hypothesis.
Darwin didn't come up with the notion of evolution, that had already been around for a long time. What Darwin did was come up with an explanation of how evolution worked (e.g. natural selection). For the record, that's what a theory (in scientific parlance) is: an explanation.
So gravity--like evolution--is both a fact and a theory. There is the fact of gravity which we can observe by the evidence, but there is also a Theory of Gravity that attempts to explain how and why gravity works.
Similarly, the Germ Theory of Disease is an explanation of how diseases are transmitted. Long before anyone proposed the Germ Theory of Disease, people understood that diseases could be communicated, they simply didn't understand how diseases were communicated, and the fact that the Germ Theory of Disease is "just a theory" does in no way prove that diseases aren't communicated.
"Also, if we evolved from ape like beings- why are they still here?"
If god created Adam out of dust why is there still dust?
Well, if you want to be persnickety about it, the actual ape-like beings we evolved from aren't around anymore. ;)
This moron's a teacher??
Man, I sure feel sorry for her students.
(Also, why would deformities be a strike against evolution? If anything, it'd be a strike against CREATIONISM. What kind of God would possibly create the potential for deformities.)
Benfea:
Well, true, they aren't, but all other things being equal they didn't necessarily have to die out. You know that. I know that. These people... they do not get it.
(Think about hagfish -- they may in fact be the most basal of the vertebrates, but they have a lot of interesting qualities that didn't exist in the common ancestor...)
Some mutations are nice, and do cool stuff.
The revertant bacteria from a strain that was originally unable to survive on a certain culture medium look like they had a favorable mutation.
Some mutations are really crappy, and do bad stuff.
Sitting outside too long without sunscreen all the time is likely to cause DNA damage, which can cause mutations which can cause cancer. I'm pretty sure cancer is bad.
"If evolutuion is true- and the earth has been around for billions of years and humans have evolved from very primitve beings, why are there still babies born with abnormailities."
They are the fault of your 'God'. In revenge for man (via scientific facts based on evidence) becoming superior to God.
Otherwise, if your so-called 'God' existed, he wouldn't allow babies to be born with abnormalities, would he?
Consider the above. Then reconcile your 'beliefs' & 'faith' with the fact of the existence of such babies.
Catch-22 can be such a cruel bitch, can she not?
"why are there still babies born with abnormailities? " It's called mutation/insertion/deletion etc in genetics. Sometimes it's harmful to the individual, sometimes it's good. Most times it's neutral.
"Also, if we evolved from ape like beings- why are they still here?"
If most North Americans came from Europe, why are there still Europeans? Does that sound stupid? Yes it does, because it's a stupid question.
I honestly don't believe your a teacher...a teacher would know better to research something themselves instead of trolling.
BTW, what the hell is "deformalities?
Confused?
