Now, after much time has elapsed, and I understand the tremendous error of their thinking, I feel like such a fool for ever thinking that their high intelligence and much learning was something to be desired in my fellow church members.

I don't know if he's criticizing the church for valuing stupidity and squashing intelligence, or praising them for it...
Oh wait. Read the post... he's praising... well, I suppose he's at least as honest as the other guy about the church not wanting people to be intelligent.
That's right. Not many wise. Leave reason, like a lamp, outside the door of the church. No thinking allowed, it is dangerous.
So, they have "high intelligence and much learning" and somehow you don't but you still figured out that there was an error in their thinking? I'd ask you to prove it, but it's pretty clear you chose not to know how.
So, if someone agrees with you, that person has high intelligence and wisdom. But when someone with high intelligence and wisdom doesn't agree with you, then it is something not to be desired. Careful not to get a neck sprain jerking your head around too fast.

You mean stupidity and religion go hand in hand? You're saying that the intelligent are unlikely to be "properly" religious?

Luckily somebody read the story about a talking snake and then one about a bunch of spinning wheels with sparks and lightning shooting out. It had human heads and multiple animal faces and it floated in the sky. THAT sure grounded me back into reality!
Much learnin' and book-smarts aren't something to be feared, intelligence is your friend. With it you could see how skewed your thinking is.
Confused?
