[A fundie wildly misunderstanding that the Michelson-Morley experiment provides evidence against a luminiferous aether, not that the earth doesn't move at all]

Albert Einstein had never existed he would have to be invented . . . and here is the reason why!!

The Michelson-Morley experiment was the reason for Albert Einstein!!

Beginning in 1887, U.S. scientist Albert Abraham Michelson began to do experiments to try and detect the motion of the earth around the sun by using the speed of light as a barometer. This experiment was called the Michelson-Morley experiment and was famous for one thing: ALL THE RESULTS WERE NEGATIVE.

"To his utter amazement, the experiment produced a zero effect. Michelson could find no drag on the transmission of light in any direction. He detected only the slightest shift in the interference fringes. Both halves of the split single beam of light were returning at virtually the same instant.
The data were almost unbelievable. The so-called ether wind had had no effect whatever on the velocity of light whether the beam was traveling with the "wind" or across it. There was only one other possible conclusion to draw—that the earth was at rest.

I am terrible at physics, I admit.

Leon, you are worse!

Or... in actuality it means there's no mysterious vapor through which light propagates.

And why does this prove that Einstein was made up? Funny how all his other theories have been tested and so far are remarkably accurate to date.

Stop trying physics, you fail at it.

No, you idiot, he proved that space is a relative vacuum.

\"Albert Einstein had never existed he would have to be invented\"

I'm no physicist, but I read up on Michelson. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Oh all those people who think they found a flaw in the theory of relativity......

Go build yorself a perpetuum mobile or something.

7/29/2006 3:33:12 PM

It just amazes me how recently we stopped believing in aether... Though this guy is still a total loon

In actuality, what was reasoned before Michelson-Morley was that light traveled through a \"luminiferous aether\", and since the Earth (and everything on it) moved through the aether, a beam of light would be affected by the \"aether wind\"; it would appear to bend relative to Earth. Michelson & Morley tried to observe this with an interferometer, a series of mirrors that could produce \"light waves\" on a surface. What they ultimately concluded from their failure to observe any rippling was that the aether couldn't physically exist.

What this had to do with Einstein is that their results were later paralleled in his explanation of special relativity.

you are so stupid i am not joking it is very awe inspiring

I'm a physics major.

You are an idiot. Firstly, said experiment was done before Einstein's major papers in 1905. Second, before that, it was speculated that there was a substance throughout the universe, the \"ether\", through which light propagated. This experiment attempted to verify such ideas. It failed.

You are a cobag.

Apples don't fall meters from the tree, therefore the world doesn't move at tremendous speeds![/idiot]

The Physics teacher in me just... died.

Mister Spak

Ha! There is a third conclusion you have not thought of!

The earth and the aether are moving at the EXACT SAME VELOCITY!!!

Reading that makes me want to put my head through a wall.

Dr Rosen

i think the retarded \"einstein had never existed\" thing is supposed to be a retort to voltaire's if \"god didn't exist it would be necessary to invent him.\"

i am still in awe of this guy he is so fucking stupid no joke it blows my mind

I think this guy must have been inhaling too much of that aether.

There is nothing that can be done to save a person like this from his own ignorance. It is obvious that this person has either done some reading or has had some education, yet that education has clearly been sucked into a wormhole and come out the other side twisted and wrecked. Pouring any more education into this person will only make the situation worse.

The Josh

You are most right. Pouring any more education into this person will only give them more ammunition to use in their idiotic, misguided tirades.

He needs to be taken out back and shot. It would be doing him a favor, like putting down a rabid dog.

7/31/2006 3:09:59 PM

Ha! There is a third conclusion you have not thought of!

The earth and the aether are moving at the EXACT SAME VELOCITY!!!

... which would be entirely consistent with the proven Biblical fact that the Earth is square.

Oh my god, it's Kilkenny!

I have to show this my someone I know who is doing poorly in physics. Now matter how much she will fail, she will still never be this stupid.

Anonymous Tau

How does one use the speed of light as a barometer? Barometers measure PRESSURE.

The michelson morley experiment was set up to try and detect 'aether' a substance very similar to all your religious paraphernalia - ie, everyone said it had to exist, but couldnt be detected.

Wait. Did this fundie just try and reverse occam's razor and claim the earth was still!?

I refer you to Galileo, bitch.
