Of course you can discover something that someone else already know about. Even though the Americas had been populated since thousands of years, the Europeans had no idea about it until Leif Eriksson went there around the year 1000. Therefore, he made a discovery (or more accurately, it was his father Erik the Red who sighted the coastline of North America during one of *his* journeys - though he never went there. Leif Eriksson did.) And that knowledge was not widely spread around Europe, and the colony in North America apparently didn't last for very long, so in 1492 when Christopher Columbus set sail for India, Europe didn't know about the Americas, and so when Columbus happened upon America, that too was a discovery. Just not the first discovery of those continents - and neither was Erik the Red's discovery.
My dad's ancestors came here in the 1590's (Dutch) (and fought on the American side in the Revolution) and my mom's came about 15 years after the Pilgrims (English). Why should Confederado's family come here probably 200+ years later and start deciding who should get out? We're all wetbacks, dude. Some of us have just dried off a few generations longer.
