Tell me why I should be [an atheist]? What advantage is there to being one? What does it have to offer?

Why? No reason at all.
You can believe what you like, just as I can believe what I like.
The problem comes in when you try to force me (or anyone else) to believe what you believe. Or when you try to enact laws to protect what you believe. Or you condemn me (or anyone else) for not believing what you believe. See where I'm going with this ?
You're free to believe anything,,,, just keep it to yourself.
Before becoming a Christian, did you investigate all extant religions in human culture, rank them in order of potential personal gain, and then choose the one at the top of the list in which to believe?
Thought not.
This post is, hands-down, the saddest one on this site. The Santa Claus comparison is accurate.
"What advantage is there to *not* being bound by ancient dogma? Why would I *want* to be free?"
It's, like, "Reality? Who cares about that?"
"You're free to believe anything,,,, just keep it to yourself. "
Agreed Cabaras. Religion should be a personal belief, and not forced on anyone. Live and let live
Less cognitive dissonance, less unrealistic expectations. No need to reconcile scientific facts with mythology. No need to abide by arbitrary and irrational "moral" standards and a better ability to understand what moral standards are of more importance in the process. You will be less likely to misjudge a person's character by simply assuming that they are meritorious merely due to being religious. You will better realize how impractical it is for society at large to be constrained by any given religion's shakily reasoned views on how people should behave, and will know that it is best if law is defined by what we know about our world through reason and observation rather than what we feel is true. You will learn that evidence for something is important if you want to convince others that you what you think about something is accurate, and will learn that confidence and simply feeling that something is true shouldn't be enough to justify what you believe, even to yourself.
And, most importantly, you will stop being wrong. I think that should be the greatest incentive of all.
Confused?
