Quote# 14015

(I have met homeschooled children, and their social skills flat out suck.)

You are full of it. Public school students typically stammer and stare at the floor when spoken to. I've met hundreds of homeschool kids over the years and have yet to see the supposed problem with social skills. Unless you mean they don't know how to put a condemn on a banana, roll a joint or work a bong. If those are the social skills you are referring to then yes, homeschoolers are deficient in those skills.

\"condemn on a banana\"

Freudian slip of the month?

And I have never put anything on a banana, and I've never rolled a joint. Bongs... well, that's a different story...

I come in contact with a lot of homeschooled kids as a teacher. They are as diverse in their social skills as any kid. Some are painfully shy and some are flashy extroverts. Homeschooling means nothing as far as social skills go, it all depends on how the parents handle the situation.

Although to be honest, there does seem to be one corelation between poor social skills and homeschooling. The kids that seem to have the most stunted social skills usually turn out to be the ones homeschooled for conservatinve religious reasons by fundie parents. Make of that what you will.

\"You are full of it.\"

I've read your stuff before, CRASH, and I know you're full of it.

\"Public school students typically stammer and stare at the floor when spoken to.\"

This is patently false. That means I'm calling you a liar, CRASH. Some students of public, private, religious and home schools stammer and/or stare at the floor, but it is not typical of any of those groups.

\"I've met hundreds of homeschool kids over the years and have yet to see the supposed problem with social skills.\"

Some of them are probably just fine, but some of them suffer from the lack of interaction with a large number of peers and teachers. They also tend to be culturally isolated.

\"Unless you mean they don't know how to put a condemn on a banana, roll a joint or work a bong.\"

I recommend such knowledge to all. Knowing HOW to do something doesn't mean one has to DO it.

\"If those are the social skills you are referring to then yes, homeschoolers are deficient in those skills.\"

Not really, I'm mostly concerned that they may be socially inept, miss out on activities that require a larger, better funded school, and be deficient in the subjects their parent/teacher is deficient in.

Putting condoms on Bannanas and the like is ofte used to show kids the best way to have safe sex if the need ever arises.

Apparently condoms and learning their use is bad.

I agree with Sandman. I know lots of homeschooled kids, and the only ones with problems tend to be those who were homeschooled for purely fundamental religious reasons.

I've never met anyone unfortunate enough to be homeschooled by fundies, but I can imagine being taught to be docile and ignorant can make friend making difficult.

I'd love to point out that no home-schooled kid can say penis and keep as straight of a face as me. <_<

Good points all around, folks; however, Papabear, I would contend that learning how to roll a joint or work a bong hardly constitutes a good or valuable skill, social or otherwise, so I cannot agree with your endorsement of it as recommended knowledge.

[quote]condemn on a banana[/auote]

Well, we use condoms. they seem to work just that little bit better. Also, in my school we didn't use banana's. We had an actual dildo.

To be fair, I've went to public school and I've been home schooled. If anything, public school has been nothing short of disasterous for my social skills.

Either way this quote just brings up yet another long standing pet peeve of mine; which is the assumption that kids should be taught how to behave by the schools when it is not their freaking job. The schools are there to educate kids. The parenting aspect of it is the parent's responsibility. Period.

I knew a homeschooled kid. Nothing too out of the ordinary; he was nice, easygoing, and loved to socialize. He was teased for not knowing some of the local lingo, though.

What if you're at a party at Snoop Dogg's house? YOu wouldn't want Dr. Dre popping a cap in your ass 'cause you fucked up your joint and had a stem poking out the paper, or slobbered all over it!

Methinks CRASH is a very unpleasant and threatening person. You have to be quite quite bad if that's the reaction you get from most publicly schooled kids.

\"Unless you mean they don't know how to put a condemn on a banana, roll a joint or work a bong.\"

I know how, does that make me a retard?
Oh, and whilst joints and bongs are perfectly aimiable pastimes, why the hell would someone actually want to put a condom on a banana?

\"I would contend that learning how to roll a joint or work a bong hardly constitutes a good or valuable skill, social or otherwise\"

I consider it to be an invaluable social skill. :D

Have you talked to every single one of the millions of public school children?

I've met hundreds of homeschool kids over the years and have yet to see the supposed problem with social skills.
They may be fine 1 one 1, but alot of them lack group skills.

The statistics have to catagorize home-schooled results for acedemic, location, medical, specialized, working children and religion reasons.

Then we'll see a batshit insane, socially retarded bunch of dots in Fundieland

One of my best friends was homeschooled and she's vivacious and completely sweet. However, her parents are both college professors whom when she wasn't learning her "school stuff" had her involved in community theatre, dance- you name it she was in it. However, her parents are hippie agnostics.

I know someone else who was homeschooled by fundamentalist parents. I'm not even going to go there. It goes beyond a lack of social skills, its more like they are living in a different solar system.
