I really don't want to get started on atheists, at least not on this thread (that would be hyjacking). But it sounds like you have met a much kinder atheist than I. I have found them all to be quite self centered and self absorbed. They pick up on causes, sure; but it is painfully obvious that they value earthly life so highly, because they believe this is all there is. And not much is worth dying for. Although many atheists have little tolorance for their perception of evil.
Atheists do have a tendency to be more civic minded than Christians, but mostly in an attempt to find meaning and beauty in life. "Those who Love this life will lose it".
What you are discribing seems to more closely fit those I know with a more "Pantheistic" view. They set a high moral standard in support of all life. They also are willing to condone any moral battle if it has an objective for the greater good. As in protecting "Mother earth" and all life to the extent of sacrificing life.

Yeah, I haven't felt that special since someone on the myspace group Sierra and myself used to 'troll'/'haunt'/'own' posted this:

"When I joined this...a long time ago...I never posted on the forums. I just have recently. I was surprised at the mass amounts of atheists on here. And you know what? I had no problem with it...until all of you just continually made fun of our faith and tried to prove us wrong with your giant egos and giant brains filled with knowledge that won't matter someday anyway. [emphasis in original]"
Maybe atheists are tired of being a silent majority and having others throw jesus at them like they were peddling crack. I know that fits me.
I would be much cheerier with religious folk if they could let the damn thing rest for five minutes. There are particulars in my life that I recommend and even endorse, the difference however is that I don't feel the need to force my likes and dislikes on everyone I see. Perhaps if you were to climb down off of your pulpit once in a while you'd have better luck!
'But it sounds like you have met a much kinder atheist than I. I have found them all to be quite self centered and self absorbed.'
And I have found most fundie Christians to be braindead, hate-filled, contradictory, deluded morons who struggle to string together two coherent thoughts.
Gah, I'm so sick of those who twist the teachings of Christ to mean that we are supposed to somehow be miserable in this life, and that we shouldn't even think of trying to make the world a better place.
"They pick up on causes, sure; but it is painfully obvious that they value earthly life so highly, because they believe this is all there is."
*sniffle* thats...the nicest thing a fundie has ever said about me!
Speaking as a practicing Christian (and the person who submitted this quote) -- by and large, I find atheists tend to be much nicer and much more interesting people than many Christians.
One can also have an interesting (and generally civil) conversation with an atheist, whereas I find that is not always true with a Christian.
Wow. I am touched. ^^
<<But it sounds like you have met a much kinder atheist than I. I have found them all to be quite self centered and self absorbed.>>
This is the only part that struck me as somewhat negative, because I think it is far more self-centerd and self-absorbed to be only doing good things in this life so that you have it 'made in da shade' for you after you die.
it is painfully obvious that they value earthly life so highly, because they believe this is all there is. And not much is worth dying for.
You hit the nail on the head! Good job! My goal in life is not to die, whereas the Christians wait on their knees their whole life anxious to die, and be taken to heaven to see Jesus.
I think earthly thoughts-you have your head in the clouds.
Well, pantheistic or not, they are ahead of you in the line for the kingdom of God. Wait, they, the prostitutes and all the people you hate. Signed. Jesus Christ.
I have found them [atheists] all to be quite self centered and self absorbed.
Was it you or them? If you approach all atheists by shouting about how horrible they are, you can't call them "self-centered" for walking away or telling you to shut up.
They pick up on causes, sure; but it is painfully obvious that they value earthly life so highly, because they believe this is all there is.

And not much is worth dying for.
Quite true. Life is valuable; the only thing more valuable than life is more than one life. Some might add liberty or happiness to the list as well. The point is that life is not something to be wasted on trivial matters.
Although many atheists have little tolorance for their perception of evil.
Atheists do have a tendency to be more civic minded than Christians, but mostly in an attempt to find meaning and beauty in life.
OK. Atheists are self-centered and self-absorbed because:
-We fight for valuable causes.
-We value life.
-We don't tolerate wrongdoing
-We're civic-minded rather than self-centered and self-absorbed
-We find meaning and beauty in life.
By contrast, I would assume selfless and charitable Christians would:
-Not fight for causes, other than making everyone Christian
-Consider life worthless; it's only a "test" of your loyalty
-Tolerate or perform wrongdoing as long as it's in the name of their god.
-Concern themselves solely with converting others
-Believe life has no meaning other than swearing loyalty to a sky fairy and praying for death, hoping he'll give you a better life.
Confused?
