Reports from others who escaped from the [World Trade Center] buildings, saw these people huddled in groups praying. It was all over the news for months. there are no atheists in a foxhole, canoe or burning/crashing building.

I was an atheist in a foxhole. I was surrounded by machine gun fire and had insurgents storming our position to overcome our dig in. I took a piece of shrapnel that would make you cringe and 3 bullets in my side. Never once did I call out to an invisible sky fairy. Your god does not exist, nor do I require the delusion that there is anything beyond this existance. Or, at the very least, that anything I do here will affect what happens then.
Smug bitch.
So people only turn to God and religion when they are desperate and are in very traumatic situations where they become panick striken and are likely to become unable to think rationally?
That's proof enough for me!
Yes, well I was an atheist flat on his belly under a Bradley AFV during a mortar and machine gun attack. I still have the fading scars of the shrapnel wounds in my shins. On other occasions I have been shelled and bombed - fortunately without sustaining any damage apart from the ringing in the ears.
At no time was I moved to call upon a deity in order to obtain deliverance - the call was for a 50 cal so I could return fire.
I have waded through the muck and bullets in most of the hell holes around the world (including the really sweaty parts of Africa, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan) and god seemed to be very noticeable by his absence.
My wife and her best friend decided they could no longer believe in any god shortly after they lost a close friend in the towers. The fact that the terrorists did this for their god appalled them.
I'll bet this Elizabeth_S lived nowhere near New York or DC, nor knew anyone there. Seeing the date, here's hoping Elizabeth_S has since smartened up and grown some compassion.
This is sick, even for fundies. Take any tradgedy, the worse it is, the better. Then take it and use it as an evangelization tool. This is messed up, and is offensive to the parties involved. There should be laws against this.
This atheist is in a burning building. No calls to god yet, but will you all please excuse me for a second.
Thank you. That's the chip pan fire put out.
It's a bit chilly now with all the windows open to let the smoke out, but fortunately the chips still look to be edible.
Should I blame god for this event?
"It was all over the news for months."
You mean the evil, liberal, satanic, communist news media that fundamentalists insist oppresses them?
"there are no atheists in a foxhole, canoe or burning/crashing building"
Nor are there atheists crashing airplanes into buildings convinced that a god will take them directly to heaven.
Jack Bauer: on which side on Kosovo? I survived NATO bombing of Novi Sad during Kosovo "war". And Novi Sad is 250 km north from Kosovo, on completely different part of the country! Why did NATO have to destroy all of the city's bridges, when we had nothing to do with Kosovo, or it's inhabitants?
You don't bomb a whole fucking country when the "trouble" is located on fucking 12% of the countries teritory (which is isolated by mountains) especially because of false acussations for genocide.
Calm down AbfNS. You are not alone. My cousin was "collateral damage" when missile hit one of Belgrade's hospitals.
I still remember that day. I've watched the news and was really pissed when our government allowed Alliance's bombers to fly over our territory. And for what? To bomb our neighbour, just because they had shit for president. Same night, Aunt Ivana's son died from shrapnel. He was only 15.
"Ja vozim stelta 117-a, nevidljivog,
taj ponos NATO-a,
i gadjam bombama, po Srbima."
Clown:I'm sorry to hear that. I sympathise with your pain. Especially for posting that song at the end of your post. "El kondor pada" sure brings back memories... PVO shooting at missiles, explosions and their Stealth F117 bomber down near Budjanovci... It marked my generation.
"Al' jedne noci primecen sam ja, iznenada,
uz pomoc radara, il' neceg drugoga, jebem li ga."
Ten years with an infantry regiment, never prayed in a foxhole, slit trench, helicopter, truck, APC, or a mess hall fight.
Oddly, this very statement indicates that most ppl didnt huddle in groups praying, but saw other ppl doing it. Why weren't they doing it themselves? Maybe they were atheists getting their asses out of the buildings quickly, thiking wtf are thoses bozos doing praying when they should be getting the hell out?
Maybe the US bombed bridges to make the atheist commie Yugos become Xtians so they could use canoes to get over the rivers. (My gf's dad was in Belgrade at the time). Seriously, it was "softwar" - you cant go quite far enough to actually do much deliberate killing so you make life uncomnfortable by disrupting the infrastructure. It also makes moving military traffic around a bit more difficult.
Wtf is that about canoes? Presumably Elizabeth is unconsciously thinking about ppl up shit creek in a canoe without a paddle. Fundies are v weird!
I've never been in a foxhole or a war, as Sweden has been mercifully spared from things like that so far, but when my dad-in-law had a heart-attack a few years ago, I did pray* to the powers-that-be to spare him. I didn't really expect any response, but I thought "it's worth every (agreeably puny) effort, if it can keep him alive. He did survive, but I put that to the skill of the medical team that cared for him.
* I was an agnostic at the time.
Confused?
