Quote# 15481

Jesus says in Matthew 5:37 (Show Context) "But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one". If we take a look at evolution - the smallest working part - we should be able to determine whether evolution is good for us or not as a theory. Should the part we look at, which at the moment is mutation, be good, we should be able to determine how good evolution will be for us; should mutation be bad, we should be able to determine how great a problem evolution warns us against.

What this poll aims to show is that opinion is and will be naturally divided as to whether mutation is good or bad (the very word is ambiguous). It is my belief that evolution is evil and a work of the Devil that simply disguises an unacceptable ambiguity as something substantial and good when it is not - I determine this belief from the words of my Lord Jesus recorded above.

Just an advisory: if you would like to call me or my family names in the discussion that follows, don't forget to indicate just how derogatory (or praiseworthy) the name is, if the name is obscure (I consider "Cro-Magnon descendent" derogatory and I currently consider Latin names obscure). Naturally, it is not expected that there will be praise for me or my family and I reserve the right to object.

Latin, man, was, is a language of culture. Youd better learn and don´t make excuses. Cro-Magnon is the French land where the remains where found. By the way, on that part, Jesus told his disciples NOT TO BE PEDANTIC. That´s all, something you are not following at all.

Look how divided people are on how best to interrupt the Bible. There was a time when people in the Roman Empire who didn't agree that Jesus was more divine than man would get rocks thrown at them. Today you have certain Christians screaming that Catholics are evil and not really Christians. Until you can solve those problems stop looking outward for things to attack with that twisted logic of yours.

Bad ambiguity! BAD!

I have no idea what Gottservant is trying to say. Does he? I doubt it.

Jesus warns his disciples that they shouldn't make vows, but that a \"Yes (I will)\" or \"No (I won't)\" should suffice.

And wheteher mutations are \"good\" or \"bad\" depends on the mutation. That is like saying that all paper is good because the bible was printed on it, or that all paper is evil because the ToE was printed on it. So your little bible verse doesn't help you in this case.

The words attributed to Jesus in this example show that openness and honesty is important for the functioning of human society. This is an important insight.
Deception is essential in the battle for survival, in many non-human species and in human to non-human relations. To apply concepts like honesty and justice which are important to humans onto the larger universe is just batshit stupid.
Gottservant, whether you like it or not, you are part of a species of great apes.

Crosis

*facepalm*

Gottservant, that verse is in the context of swearing an oath. He is saying not to put the weight of whatever you're swearing on behind your words; just speak the truth.

And wheteher mutations are \"good\" or \"bad\" depends on the mutation.

And the environment. Sickle cell sucks for us, but if you're in an environment where malaria is common, heterozygotes for sickle cell are actually at a huge advantage because they are immune to malaria but suffer few of the ill effects of sickle cell.

Totally missed the target! That Bible quote is referring to the fact that Christians should be honest and trustworthy; that a Christian's \"yes\" or \"no\" should be beyond doubt to others and therefore a Christian should never need to sweat oaths reassuring them that they aare telling the truth.

That's all Jesus is talking about. This is just another example of a Fundie listening the the words without ever considering the meaning.

\"If we take a look at evolution - the smallest working part - we should be able to determine whether evolution is good for us or not as a theory.\"

By fair implimentation of the very same criteria by which you judge the ToE to be evil, I defy you to judge cars, computers, modern medicine or gravity not to be evil.

\"[Mutation,] the very word is ambiguous\"

The word \"mutation\" is not ambiguous. You can clear up your confusion with a brief stop at a dictionary.

\"I currently consider Latin names obscure\"

Latin is not used in the sciences to be obscure, Latin is used because it is a dead language and therefore the meanings of Latin words are stable.

Lots of good points made. I'll just add that the theory of evolution expects most mutations to be bad. In fact, if they were all good, that would be an argument for theistic evolution, since it would suggest that something might be guiding the process. In any event, the whole premise is a non sequitur. Whether mutations are good are bad has nothing to do with whether the theory is good or bad. That would be like saying that earthquake prediction models are wrong because earthquakes are bad.

Napoleon the Clown

Chingo to madre, puta.

9/30/2006 6:23:37 PM

Luis

Napoleon, I think that you mean \"chinga tu puta madre\", that would be \"fuck your whorish mother\", or did you mean \"fuck your mother, whore\"? If so, it would be \"chinga tu madre, puta(o)\".

Or \"I fuck your mother, whore\", \"chingo a tu madre, puta\" or \"I fuck your whore of a mother\" \"Chingo a tu puta madre\"
. Notice that \"chingar\", while not the most accepted spanish verb for \"to fuck\", is perfectly usable, but \"coger\" is also accepted here in México for insults and whatnot. Might even be stronger, for \"chingar\" is more widely used.
All of this might be a bit subtle, but that's the beauty of language, one displaced symbol or word and the meaning changes completely.

And anyways, Gottservant sucks.

Gottservant's acceptance of a scientific theory is dependant on whether it's good or bad for him? Well, I guess that's one approach.

Im not even going to try make sense out of this mess.

9/30/2006 9:27:55 PM

Luis

Scott, the basic message is right, a couple of minor errors here and there, but it is fine.

The correct expression would be this:
\"me cojo a tu puta madre, deseo que mueras en un incendio\".

\"Incendio\" would be the correct form of \"fire\" in this case, because \"fuego\" refers to the ignited material, not the event of a building or whatever being in flames.
The \"me\" is more or less optional, but it sounds better that way.

Also: Yay for this guy's opinion. Who do you think is the source of the most comedy, him, supersport or JohnR7?

Gottservant Strikes Back... and misses the target by a few lightyears.

Evolution, mutations, and more widely facts, scientific theories and reality don't care whether you find them inconvenient, bad or evil, they just exist, you ignoramus maximus.

(I consider \"Cro-Magnon descendent\" derogatory and I currently consider Latin names obscure)

I'm sure Cro-Magnons (or even Australopitheci) would also feel insulted that someone would suggest they are related to you. Anyway, your pathetically limited vocabulary is your problem, not ours.

John

I consider \"Cro-Magnon descendent\" derogatory ...

What's he talking about? Cro-magnons were modern humans, identical to us. Is he suggesting he descended from some other, non-human species?

Just for those not so inclined, Gott is more or less God in german. This guy reminds me of a few german christians I've known, so stuck in the belief they can't see anything else, and can't really handle it.
