Personally, I don't hate. I don't even hate Phelps, I wish he'd shut up and maybe even die, but I don't hate him. Hating costs effort which I can spend on more productive things than thinking about people I don't like.
I don't know where I heard it, but the opposite of loving isn't hating. It's apathy.

Difference is mostly in how strict you follow laws.
Atheists don't hate things they believe to be imaginary. It would be like hating, I dunno, a flying cucumber.

I think an atheist can hate god under certain conditions.
Even an atheist will acknowledge that god exists on a conceptual level. He dosn't exist in the concrete but you can hate him in the same way you hate a concept.
For example one could say \"I hate racism.\" Racism is conceptual, you can't carry a bucket of racism or take a photo of it (you can only take a photo of it's consequneces) but it's a concept that causes people to adopt certain awful behaviors.
If the idea of god causes similar behaviors in those who believe god is a true entity an atheist can hate god as an abstract concept.

When I mention anything negative about 'god' I do so to mock the beliefs of the people supporting the bible as law and then not admitting to the fact that their god is a complete heartless prick. Fundies use it as an excuse to hate whomever they don't agree with, \"As god/jesus would have.\"
