Mob rule isn't the opposite of political correctness going over the edge, mob rule is political correctness going over the edge. Witch burnings? The "Reign of Terror?" The Bolsheviks? National Socialism? Mao's purges? Tiannenman Square?

Yes, Everett, all of those incidents happened because of a little too much tolerance, didn't they?

None of those things have anything to do with political correctness, and everything to do with authoritarian governance.

Political correctness is the social pressure to take care with one's speech for fear it will offend. What that has to do with instituting an oppressive and murderous regime of unjust governance onto an unwilling population, I don't know.

Witch burnings? The witches were \"political correctness going over the edge?\"

Tiannenman Square? The pro-freedom crowd was at fault for being \"political correctness going over the edge?\"

I admire the semantics of holier-than-thou crackpots. Can I know what do all this facts have to do with political correctedness?, unless you´re hinting that at the time and place these facts happened it was \"politically correct\" to hate the other.

I don't understand what's so shocking about what he says. Just think a little bit:

Take for example witch burnings. Now, do witches exist? Of course not! Then how come there were so many witch burnings? Well, remember Giordano Bruno? The guy who said some stuff which went against the teachings of the Catholic Church. Yes indeed, he was politically incorrect for that time. And he paid for it. Political correctness is indeed a form of mob rule. It is nowadays less violent than it was back then because our society has changed. But it is in essence the same thing.

Political correctness is not equal to tolerance people. It's just a nice word for conformity, intellectual mob rule.

If that's the case then the entire concept of \"If you act like an asshole people will not like you.\" is also mob rule. It forces conformity upon the asshole to not be an asshole.

That's the typical case of PC. The definition of acting like an asshole becomes institutionalized and assholes get punished officially. Often it's not even that. Someone acts like an asshole, people hate them for it and the asshole goes crying \"Political correctness! Political correctness! Poor me! Poor me!\" But guess what? If you offend someone they counterattack. No surprise there.

The words \"political correctness\" have been thrown around so much that they've become meaningless. I've once heard a national news program refering to Sesame Street's attempt to use Cookie Monster's love of sweets to teach a counterexample of healthy eating as \"politically correct\". I'm pretty sure the words officially became nonsense on that day.

Considering that mob rule is the aggression of the majority against the minority and (modern) political correctness is primarily about the prevention of harassment of the minority that would make political correctness mob rule designed to minimize mob rule behavior. It only forces conformity on one point: don't harass people who don't conform to your particular ideology.

Yeah, I know there are cases where the leverage is all out of whack and PC gets retarded, but the core principal in avoidance of conflict between nonconforming groups.

\"Tiannenman Square?\"

I'm not sure what his point is, but I'm fairly sure that mob rule != centralized authoritarianism, which is what most of his examples amount to.

What the fuck? Nazism is political correctness? Calling Jews inferior is politically correct? EC Everett must be on the top of Mount Everest, because no one breathing the right concentration of air could be anywhere near as deluded as him.

There is a certain fundy \"logic\" at play here once you realise that political correctness is the fundy catch-phrase for liberal/leftist thought. If those \"witches\" hadn't been preaching hate against the true god, they wouldn't have needed burning. If those dang commies weren't trying to destroy the German way of life, Hitler wouldn't have had to kill all the Jewish spies they sent to Germany. If those radical student protesters weren't spewing hate againt the Chinese government, they wouldn't have needed to be run over by tanks. See....it all makes sense...well at least to a fundy.

Fenris_Wulf: Where do you get those Fundivision(TM) glasses, to see things from their perspective so clearly?

On second thought, don't bother telling me. I'd really rather not see a world as scary as the one they see anyhow.

So now political correctness is totalitarian?

I guess this speaks to Americans' reluctance to let other people tell them what to do or say.

But I still don't understand why some people cling to the idea that they have a God-given right to be offensive in their language.
