Funny, I don't think the Brits, Aussies, and Americans consider themselves \"one people\" even though they speak the same language. Nor the Spanish, Mexicans, Venezuelans, Chileans, etc.

Well, then, even disregarding Crosis' excellent point, I guess the Tower of Babel must've been at least 10,000 years ago, just to allow time for the various languages around at the time of the egyptians to develop. So much for the geneology of Genesis.

And really, why did God bother with making everyone speak different languages? We can't reach Heaven now with space travel technology, how were a bunch of Bronze Age people supposed to reach Heaven with stones and mortar? God didn't need to garble anybody's speech. He could've just let the idiots fail.
Obvious answer: the story, like most stories in the Bible, is a fairy tale concocted by fallible humans who had no idea how vast the universe was, or why we speak different languages.
