Wasn't it just last month that Michael Richard (Kramer from Seinfeld) gave a perfect example of what he would have done just fifty years ago? The violence was present even in the later half of 20th century, nearly 100 years after slavery was abolished. If your historical reference is the movie "Gone with the Wind", I can understand why you think what you think.
