Quote# 2070

... the bible is clear about condoning slavery (no matter whether they are/were willing or not), but does not go back on it's word and abolish it. Jesus coming sure would have been a golden opportunity to abolish it. I believe because God and his obvious nature (even if it is wrathful and seemingly mean) established a heirarchy. It goes from God to the Man, to the woman, to the children, to the slaves, to the animals, etc. The bible makes God's description of himself clear, his masculine and powerful image (even in contrast to Jesus) clearly establishes a heirarchy that includes condoning slaves. We can't ignore the scripture if we are to determine what the bible says about this. And since Jesus didn't abolish it with his coming, I think we have to conclude slavery is cool with God. (whether or not the slaves were/are willing is another issue).

People are not subhuman because they're slaves, you flaming asshole. And if God established such a hierarchy, why were there no slaves in Eden?

Yup, bad news. You're the slave. And the Bible tells you to obey your masters.

Now fetch me a V8, bitch.

I don't get how these people don't understand that the Bible was written during a bronze age society and, of course, society has changed a lot since then.

"We can't ignore the scripture if we are to determine what the bible says about this."

As there are plenty of reasons to ignore scripture already, this one is just another drop in the bucket.

Yeah, no wonder god's such a pissed off prick, manly man that he is, and here his only begotten turns out to be a long haired peacenik. God just wanted a boy to toss around the ol' pigskin with, and share pussy stories, and he damn near got a girl, instead.

Except that slavery was only truly acceptable to the people of the time as long as there was no alternative. All the justifications were used because they were, inherently, uncomfortable with the situation (at least, those who wrote the excuses were). Once machines began to replace human labor, slavery sudden;y became much less popular. "Jesus" didn't abolish slavery because it would be impractical, unpopular, possibly treasonous, and unwise at the present time.

Okay, GTX. Put this collar and lead on. Then do the cooking, cleaning, laundry, dusting, tidying up, shopping, and other related household tasks. Come on, they won't do themselves, chop-chop!

...and if you're extra good, you can wear the French Maid's outfit later. My girlfriend will like that!

...what's that? You're not willing to be my slave and do all of the above? Well then. You've just destroyed your own argument. Certainly the notion that, even if your so-called 'God' exists, he's not even worthy of praise, respect - or even belief.

PROTIP: Slavery abolished by secular (or who certainly thought secularly) people. They never took the Bible into consideration, when it came to their own morality, when they concluded that a human being considered 'property & chattel' by another human being was wrong. Period.

That's what we have to conclude.
