No, the tree doesn't know, but the color of the wood deposited depends on the growth patterns over the course of a year. It doesn't need to \"know\".

that's right, it doesn't.
what the rings show are growth rings. a tree grows more in spring, and gets thicker in layers. you can count the growth rings to see how many years old the tree is.
