Quote# 2165

[On the third-world tribesmen going to hell paradox] I have a friend that is agnostic. Her big hang-up is her cats. What happens to her cats when they die if God is real? She believes that if God is real, her cats either vanish or go to hell because they don’t accept Jesus. So she chooses to not believe in God because she can’t believe in a god that would do this (although I have explained where this isn’t necessarily the case). It absolutely dumbfounds me where some people are so worried about outside things like their cats, or this native in the wilderness, that they would choose an eternity in hell for it.

Because like, how dare we place a spiritual value in other living things. I prefer to think that if humans have souls, then anything else that lives does too, plant, animal or fungus.

<double take> Did I just read what I think I read?

it's called solidarity, empathy, and pity (in its purest sense).

Even those with theistic leanings cannot accept the sort of god that damns 99.9999% of its creation to eternal damnation. Extinction would be kinder, but if hell exists under the Xian terma, I'd prefer to burn knowing that I was more honourable than this god.

Yeah, what kind of low-browed fool cares about anything other than themselves...

"I can't understand how anybody would not be chickenshit enough to sell out his fellow humans and worship an evil god for his own benefit. Why would you possibly choose to be moral when it's not in your own self-interest? Fuck the natives in the wilderness, I want my pie in the sky!"

Right, because those natives have no value and are pre-destined to go to Hell...

You are a sick, sick person.

Once again, a fundie puzzles me with his ability to find nothing wrong with worshiping an entity that is without remorse and compassion, and yet claim that he and his ilk have the same in spades.

I agree with the poster completely. After all, how could her friend be concerned about other living beings? [/sarcasm]

I find it rather suspicious that this supposed agnostic friend seems to be working from the assumption that the only possibilities in terms of religion are atheism and vicious right-wing fundie Christianity. Then again, I've met atheists with the same attitude.

Jesus:
"Love your neighbor as yourself."

Apostle:
"Who is my neighbor?"

Jesus:
...

"Let me tell you the story of the good Samaritan."

Christ said to care for others as much as or more than for yourself, and then proceeded to set an example (regardless of if he was the Son of God or just another guy). How can anyone who claims to be a Christian reject that message?

Well, if you have a dog or other pet, you'd better get rid of it immediately. Just take it to an animal shelter, or better yet, abandon it on the side of a road somewhere, and let nature take care of your problem for free.

After all, it's just a distraction from the real business of salvation, and Jesus will give you all the love and affection that anyone really needs, amirite?
