"Reader voices strong opinion on atheists"
It's time to stomp out atheists in America. The majority of Americans would love to see atheists kicked out of America. If you don't believe in God, then get out of this country.
The United States is based on having freedom of speech, religion, etc., which means you can believe in God any way you want (Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, etc.), but you must believe.
I don't recall freedom of religion meaning no religion. Our currency even says, "In God We Trust." So, to all atheists in America: Get off our country.
Atheists have caused the ruin of this great nation by taking prayer out of our schools and being able to practice what can only be called evil. I don't care if they have never committed a crime, atheists are the reason crime is rampant.

Oh yeah, prayer in schools is the problem. Nothing to do with colapse of welfare, unobtainable healthcare, 20 million unemployed, inner city degredation, rich/poor gap or overly militant foreign policy.
Prayer in schools, and she'd be apples

How loving and open-minded of you. Jesus must love the foaming at the mouth hate speeches you give.

Complete bullshit. If you don't know what you are talking about, shut the fuck up. You don't know the minds of the framers, the constitution itself, and/or the true meanings.

The Mercury dime had a picture of the Roman god of profit on it, what's your point?

All right then, using your same logic, christians have caused cancer increases throughout the world due to religious wars in the past, and by wearing mixed fabrics. I can be just as asinine as you can be.
Sorry, freedom of religion means freedom to believe in anything you want, including nothing at all. This is the definition and what you´re doing goes against the very essence of human rights. And in God we trust exists only since the fifties. If they haven´t comitted a crime, stop accusing them of criminality and stop saying I don´t care. People don´t care about your opinions either, specially the superstitious one about prayer. Don´t you get a dictionary to look up what prayer means?
... We don't commit crimes so WE must be the reason there's so much crime?
Yeah, I'll believe you. Its not like being raised with the belief that the ONLY reason not to do horrible things to people is that you'll get punished for it, coupled with "oh but if you pray you'll be forgiven for all of it!" could possibly be at least a somewhat more plausible explanation...
Otherwise it would mean that all those secular regions teaching their kids to do good because that's what they want people to do to them, and because everyone benefits in the long run from being excellent to eachother have much lower crime rates than bible-belt red states or theocracies!

Detrs: Yes, it was on Pharyngula yestoday, and there someone commented this letter is around since 2001. So, I'll call a Poe here.
Actually, I had a scan of the clipping of this that a friend of mine sent me that I was planning on submitting a few weeks ago, but I did a search for it, and surprise, found that this was done way back when.
Not only that, but it's been printed in about 4 newspapers that I was able to find. That part doesn't surprise me as fundamentalists aren't known for having a vast well of deep and original thought.

The oldest of these that I could find is here .
I don't recall freedom of religion meaning no religion.
Deism is a religion now? Since when?
Our currency even says, "In God We Trust."
Added after the fact, by unAmerican religious nuts. Do your research.
"which means you can believe in God any way you want (Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, etc.), but you must believe."
Can I believe in Allah? How about the Flying Spaghetti Monster?
"I don't recall freedom of religion meaning no religion."
I don't recall freedom of religion meaning compelled to have a religion. So to all fundies in America: Get off our country.
you can believe in God any way you want ... , but you must believe.
What part of the sentence "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ..." says you must believe?
I don't recall freedom of religion meaning no religion.
The Constitution doesn't use the phrase "freedom of religion".
Atheists have caused the ruin of this great nation by taking prayer out of our schools
The Supreme Court case barring public schools from conducting prayer services was brought by a church-attending Unitarian (Abington v. Schempp).
No law prohibits praying or reading the Bible in school. The court decision only prohibits public school employees from conducting prayer sessions.
"It's time to stomp out atheists in America."
What a delightful display of Christian love. Jesus would be so proud.
"The majority of Americans would love to see atheists kicked out of America."
I don't really believe MOST Americans would be so thoughtless and rash.
"If you don't believe in God, then get out of this country."
So, unless I believe in a fairy tale deity, as you do, I should have to leave the country in which I was born, a country founded on freedom?
"The United States is based on having freedom of speech, religion, etc., which means you can believe in God any way you want (Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, etc.), but you must believe."
I notice your examples are all sects of Xianity. How 'bout if I believe in Hindu gods, or mother nature as god, or the FSM or pink unicorn? What if I believe that the human mind is god? What if I believe I am god? What if I believe that the processes of science are god?
"I don't recall freedom of religion meaning no religion."
You can't police belief, only the expression of belief.
"Our currency even says, 'In God We Trust.'"
Not when it leaves my wallet. "In God we trust" is inaccurate and unconstitutional. It does not belong on our currency.
"So, to all atheists in America: Get off our country."
It is my country, too, asshat. I don't really enjoy sharing it with the likes of you, but it is my lot, just as it is yours to share it with me.
"Atheists have caused the ruin of this great nation by taking prayer out of our schools and being able to practice what can only be called evil."
Prove that the removal of prayer from public schools has caused the "ruin" of this country.
What practices, specific to atheists, are evil? Who gets to decide what is evil, you?
"I don't care if they have never committed a crime, atheists are the reason crime is rampant."
Rampant among Christians, I might point out.
Apparently you don't care about the constitution, Bill or Rights or due process, either.
The United States is based on having freedom of speech, religion, etc., which means you can believe in God any way you want
Since when did freedom come to mean "you have to do things my way"? Freedom is pretty damn meaningless if you have to stick to certain narrow choices, and I seriously doubt the founders of this country would have wanted that. I'm no expert on this stuff, but I'm pretty sure that "freedom of religion" means that citizens of the United States are free to follow any religion they like. Or not to follow any, for that matter.
I don't recall freedom of religion meaning no religion.
But, in order to really be a freedom, wouldn't it have to? Again, how can you have freedom if there are restrictions in place? You can't really believe in freedom of anything, if you're going to insist that people do things your way.
I don't care if they have never committed a crime, atheists are the reason crime is rampant.
Kind of flies in the face of the legal system, don't you think? You do know that in America, people are considered innocent until proven guilty, right? So where's your proof? And no, you can't fall back on the Bible. The United States is not run according that dusty old book.
Anybody here (besides me) want to take the whole group of fundies, put them all on an island out in the remote Pacific Ocean, make sure they will NEVER acquire the technology to leave the island and be done with them, once and for all?
Freedom of speech lets you not speak, freedom of religion also includes no religion (Its not freedom otherwise)
American currency says "In god we trust" because of the communists a few decades ago, it wasn't there before that
Freedom of religion also includes not forcing your beliefs on other people.
Get the fuck out of the natives country, but don't come back to Europe
I'm not even going to try to go through all the BS, but I'll touch on this one thing:
No one has taken prayer out of school. If a student wants to sit there and pray (silently)during study hall or before a test, by all means pray. Do it all day for all anyone cares, though grades might suffer. Who would know what was going on in their head anywho?
What has been banned is PREACHING. No person in a position of authority should have a right to teach (and pray at) other peoples kids about their personal religious views. That's why we have so many kinds of churches. Pick one, dammit and take your kids there to learn what you want them to learn. It shouldn't be done in a public school.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
