Why would anyone wish to be an atheist? You have absolutely no hope beyond the grave... nor do your children! What a frightening thought! All you have to look forward to is eternity in the grave. My life has meaning and purpose beyond that which I place on it. You cannot say the same for your lives. My life is eternal, yours is temporary. There is a Supreme Being who has a plan for my future, you have nobody and no future and you spend hours here waisting what time you have left. I will never understand the atheist mindset?

You will never understand the atheist mindset, because you're so scared of death you have to create a grand delusion with a MAGIC MAN IN THE SKY to pretend you can escape it. And if you need a fucking magic man in the sky to give your life meaning, you are a sad, sad little person.

No, the ONLY meaning and purpose your life has is that which YOU place on it. Since you think this is a dress rehersal, my guess is that you have sold yourself WAY short.
I didn't *want* to be an atheist. I am an atheist because I found that I lack the ability to believe in something for which there is absolutely no evidence and I cannot, and frankly do not want to, lie to myself enough to ignore the contradictions between every religion there is and observable reality.
And I don't see why I should need meaning in my life beyond what I give it, it's my life and I should have the freedom to give it what meaning I choose instead of accepting "meaning" on a silver platter from some pastor.
I am the one that makes plans for my future, and I have my family and friends. I don't need an imaginary friend, I'm an adult. Imaginary friends are for 6 year olds.
I offer you the converse of Pascal's wager:
as an atheist for all practical concerns, I live my life knowing tomorrow could be my last day, so I try to live each day as well as possible. I try to make a difference. I try to add something to other people's lives if only through kindness. I try through charity to give something to "good" causes.
If I'm right and death is the end, I know that I've made things a little better for those I love, for those whose lives I've touched even a little, and even for the unknowing animals at the shelter I help through giving.
If I'm wrong, then I'll be able to face "god" standing up, not grovelling. And hopefully, the things I done to make my life meaningful will be acceptable in place of brown-nosing worship. If not, then I will happily depart from such a shallow being.
Atheists look at the evidence, and make a decision.
Christians look at the evidence, and throw it out because they want to believe in a magic sky daddy.
I don't pretend to know what happens after death. You do.

Knowing death is the end, for myself and my family, is just accepting reality. It doesn't prey on my mind because you don't obsess over thing you can't change.
Now you lot, you've been sold a scam, that you and your will have an eternity of bliss by enslaving yourself to the church and dogma. Living forever is not an option, get used to it.

It's not so much wanting to be an atheist as actually giving a damn about whether or not by view of the world is correct. Whether I want to believe in an afterlife or a "Supreme Being" (cough, cough) is neither here nor there, because there is simply no evidence of such a thing. Your life doesn't become eternal just because you wish it to be so.
You want to understand my mindset? This is the only life I, or anyone else, gets. We'll all be dead in a thousand years, but the important thing is that we're not dead yet. So we should make it a fun ride for ourselves and each other.
Ah, Pascals wager. Once you have no further arguments for your belief you might as well admit that you didn't even think about it yourself very much.
1) I have to give my life a purpose myself. Theological exegesis states that god doesn't directly manipulate us to do anything, as such he can't give our lifes purpose, but he certainly wants us to live it and not constantly just strive for a good place in the afterlife.
Even if I'm wrong and god doesn't exist I will feel good about my life which I will try to make as great as possible for me and for everyone else and as such I will have no regrets whatsoever. The same seemingly can't be said about you sadly.
I have no children. I think afterlife is just like beforelife.
Which supreme being? Sauron? Quetzalcoatl? Brahman?
Who said we wished to be atheists? It just sort of happened. I learned too much about religion, and Christianity in particular, so it gradually made less and less sense, until there was nothing left.
You waste your life here and now with thoughts and dreams about an afterlife that has no evidence of its existence.
