Quote# 22851

[According to a Newsweek poll]

Nearly half (48 percent) of the public rejects the scientific theory of evolution; one-third (34 percent) of college graduates say they accept the Biblical account of creation as fact. Seventy-three percent of Evangelical Protestants say they believe that God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years; 39 percent of non-Evangelical Protestants and 41 percent of Catholics agree with that view.

Truth does not require majority opinion.

2/3rds of those graduating from college think that biblical creation isn't true. Mind this is including biblical schools.
I think that a damn good start.

4/2/2007 7:55:12 PM

Why I'm not surprised at all that it's all about uneducated rednecks?

4/4/2007 6:42:41 PM

Raptor Jesus

And many Americans believe they can make shit up and be believed.

4/4/2007 6:55:47 PM

I blame the gubmint for that. Sets a bad example, that does.

4/4/2007 7:23:38 PM

And in related news, according to a Newsweek poll, nearly half of Americans are fucking stupid and deluded.

4/7/2007 2:17:50 AM

Sounds like the only option left is the cluenuclear one....

4/7/2007 6:27:04 AM

I love the fact that hes stated that the majority of protestants and catholics don't agree with him.
Tip: You don't have to buy genesis to believe in god.

Hmmm... 52% of the general population accept evolution, but 66% of college graduates do. Obviously more educated people accept evolution.

Kinda tells you something, eh?

4/7/2007 4:02:35 PM

I still find it scary as Hades that a third of people who have graduated from uni still believe in creationism. I mean arn't they supposed to be the intelectual elite? yet they still can't see the evidence for evolution. I fear for the future.

I agree with Safaraz. College graduates? Oh well, this is the US. I guess that just makes it easier for places like Australia to out-compete America.

4/7/2007 11:25:40 PM

Wet Walnuts

It is because of nonsense like this that the USA is falling behind other countries in scientific and technological fields. We are graduating more and more people who can't think critically about anything and have no grasp of the scientific method...so they will just believe whatever their pastor/priest/rabbi tells them.

How utterly pathetic.

4/8/2007 12:16:41 AM

The Jamo

Who cares? It does not change the fact that it's all bullshit.

9/25/2007 3:57:14 AM

Professor M

This is what happens when we let people who've gone through four years of indoctrination at unaccredited faux-educational religious institutions "college graduates" in public.

9/25/2007 4:57:02 AM

rubber chicken

Ambrielle- At that rate, Litchenstien will outcompete America

99.99% of people believe the Earth is flat.

9/25/2007 8:55:53 AM

David B.

According to the CIA factbook:

33.03% of the World's population are Christian.
17.33% are Catholics,
5.80% are Protestants,
3.42% are Orthodox,
1.23% are Anglican.

If we generously assume the rest are all Evangelicals/Baptists that gives:

5.25% are E/Bs.

So factoring in the figures above we get 15.01% out of 33% agree with the above statement.

So less than half (45.5%) of all Christians believe in the literal interpretation of Genesis.

So next time some fundie YEC starts demanding creationism in the science class, remember, it's not just a minority view, it's a minority Christian view!

9/25/2007 9:00:11 AM

Reverend Jeremiah

So i guess we have to dump science to make the majority happy huh?

9/5/2008 12:03:23 AM

Do many of these college graduates come frome SEC (South East Conference) or other sports schools?

I am ashamed of my country

8/25/2010 9:29:05 PM

As close as damnit as 100% of the public used to think that the Earth is flat and that the sun revolves around us.

It didn't make them right. As has already been pointed out, the truth is not a democracy and does not require a majority to believe it.

8/26/2010 1:36:33 AM

I call bullshit on catholics approving creationism. The church has never hid that evolution is not at odds with the doctrine.
