Torturing HexenHammer to death over the course of several months for some random minor infraction is more merciful than sending someone to hell...does that mean we should do that too?

Yes. That's exactly what we're saying. Your god is a paranoid jerk who sets the bar for human behavior pretty damned low.

It wouldn't be too difficult to be more merciful than your god.

God ain't so merciful, you know, if he's going to condemn me to hell for all eternity for a momentary lapse on my part for which I am truly sorry afterwards.

Well, I wouldn't condemn people. I wouldn't kill a nation full of firstborns because their king was being a jerk, either.

A compassionate God? That must be how the conservatives came up with \"Compassionate Conservatism.\"

If it's that easy for us \"fallen\" mortals to be more merciful than your God, then that should tell you something about your God.

I haven't looked at the context of this quote, but I thought these were the same people who protested abortion because, you know, who are we, as mere men, to play God by controlling who lives and who dies?

Jesus´s answer:
be perfect as your holy father is.
The parable of the bad clerk.
God made us to his image.
Can you be consistent for once?

If your God is such an asshole that He would condemn people to Hell for ridiculous sins, then yeah, I think we all have a duty to be more merciful than that.

Uh, what?
You're justifying things based on comparison to how evil your Lord is, now?
And that in any way, shape or form sounds even remotely Christian to you?

It's EASY to be more merciful than god. All you have to do, is NOT massacre, or commit genocide, NOT ask your friends to sacrifice their sons for you, NOT kill everyone on earth, NOT blame children for the sins of their fathers, NOT treat female captives of war as sperm banks, NOT bash little kids' heads open, NOT slash open pregnant women's bellies, NOT be misogynistic...

I help people up when they trip or fall.
That makes me more compassionate than your God, who would just kick them and then demand a blowjob.

I believe this is exactly the reason why Christians often lack compassion, though they may not be aware of it. It's hard to have compassion when your \"ultimate authority\" doesn't have it. I speak from my own (subjective) experience.
