Quote# 24057

I have compassion... but I don't claim to have more compassion than God.

If God condemns a sinner to Hell, if anything man's ultimate punishment, execution, is STILL pretty merciful in comparison.

What are you saying, we should try to be more merciful than God?

In that case, let God do the job, don't you think?. Or are you now afraid you can be better than God?. Ah yes, that stupid verse in Matthew, where Jesus saved an adultress from the lynching mob and said that "judge not........."

Why compare at all? Just be as compassionate as you can, regardless of how compassionate others are.
Use the "Treat others as you want to be treated"-rule, perhaps. Would you like to be executed? Don't think so. Then others would probably not like it either.

Well let's look at "God's" track record:

1. He created the first man and woman; they ate an apple, He kicked them out of paradise and forced them to endure labor and work for the rest of eternity.

2. He thought people (who He made in His OWN image) were vile sinful assholes, so He drowned them all, with the exception of one guy and his family who were responsible for saving all the creatures of the world, which were NOT made in His image, yet which HE liked better than humans.

3. He smote all the first born children of Egypt. (Do I have that right?) Then sent His "chosen" people, the people he liked most, to wander the desert for 40 years, and be shit on by the rest of humanity for the next several thousand years.

4. He sent His only begotten son to Earth to spread His word and JUST when people were starting to listen, He killed His son using the most torturous execution method yet devised by man.

5. He "designed" us to have certain overwhelming urges and inclinations ALL of which in direct violation of the rules He set up for us. If we lead the most bland, un-exciting life imaginable, our "reward" is eternity basking in His radiant awesomeness... If not, we roast in an eternal pit of fire.

So yeah, if He does exist, this guy's a raging fucking asshole. The LAST thing we ought to do is be as "merciful" as He is.

Seeing as how your god ordains mass murder in the bible, yes, we should.

Vlad the Impaler was more merciful than God. So if you are not more compassionate than your non-existent chum, well, I can't even begin to imagine.

On a side note, this Fundie's nickname is noteworthy:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malleus_Maleficarum

"Hexenhammer" was the name of a german infamous treatise, written in 1486. This malicious book was very influential in the widespread persecution of alleged "witches" starting in late medieval times, which claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people.

Somebody who chooses his nickname after this madness immediately disqualifies himself, in my humble opinion.

Nelson Mandela - despite his early years as leader of the ANC in which he condoned violence - when he was elected as president of South Africa, could have become more power-mad than Robert Mugabe or even Idi Amin, exacting his revenge on all the Afrikaans-speaking whites in that country. Scrapping the constitution, appointing himself 'President for Life'. Renaming Johannesburg 'Mandelaburg' [/"The Running Man"], putting up statues of himself everywhere, you name it.

But he didn't.

He served only one term. And, since those 27 years in prison (under the previous Apartheid regime), he'd changed completely. He created & fostered an atmosphere of reconciliation. Mercy.

And joining the list headed by Mandela: Lech Walesa. Vaclav Havel. Gandhi. (thus proving a saying I invented: 'Dictators: don't jail your political dissidents. They may well end up running your country.'). Oh, and speaking of Gandhi:

"What are you saying, we should try to be more merciful than God?"

You & your fundie ilk are the reason why Gandhi said this (emphasis added):

'I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.
