You are mistaken. There is no separation of church and state in US Constitution. That is an old outdated ACLU myth long repudiated by the courts.
The vast number of people believing that the myth of separation of church and state is NOT in the constitution include the founding fathers and the US Supreme Court!

The exact words "separation of church and state" don't appear in the Constitution. So what? The Constitution says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ..." Jefferson explained: "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state. "
Well, I wouldn't say the founding fathers still believe that, since they're dead. But seeing as they wrote the goddamn thing, I don't see how they could possibly misinterpret it!

Didn't the Founding Fathers write the Constitution? They of all people ought to have known what is in the Constitution. (As they are long dead, they neither know nor believe anything now, though...)
The ACLU exists to defend constitutional rights, they ought to be fairly familiar with all the little quirks of the Constitution as well.
