I'm certainly no expert on astronauts, but even I know that it takes years and years and years of hard training, both physical and mental, to even be considered for a space trip. That diversity you are spouting, nah, not so much. How many percent of space travellers have been women? How many percent of humans are women? Are they corresponding?
We in Sweden are very proud of our one and only astronaut (so far), Christer Fugelsang. He trained for at least 14 years before he was allowed to travel.

The disaster happened due to poor maintenance. A piece of foam insulation came off the main fuel tank and hit the left wing insulation. Upon re-entry, with no insulation, the heat just melted the wing from the inside, eventually melting the entire thing from inside. Thanks to the massive energy generated from the friction with the air, it effectively exploded.
