PROOF evolution is NOT true?
Did you know that the genome of an onion is larger than the genome of a human?
If the "theory" (and yes, it is just a THEORY) of evolution is true, then you know that since every creature on earth shares a common ancestor that means that the genome of humans should be almost as long as that of an onion.
But it isn't. It doesn't even come close.
If you believe in the "theory" of evolution, then you believe we came from apes and because of this we inherited most of their DNA. Those apes evolved from other animals. The apes inherited their DNA from other animals. Those animals inherited their DNA from reptiles who inherited their DNA from fish, who inherited their DNA from smaller organisms.
The point that I'm trying to make is that if evolution is true, how come our genomes are so short?
Any moron should be able to see that Christianity is the one true religion and that the "theory" of evolution is totally false.
Do you agree?

Kent Hovind wrote an essay saying that evolution predicted the more chromosomes, the more complex an organism was, so humans were on their way to being as complex as a tobacco plant, but far from the ultimate evolutionary goal, which was a fern. Hovind was joking. He's pretty dumb, but even he isn't that dumb. Unfortunately, many creationists are. His essay has morphed into a serious argument for people like Jerry S, who clearly wasn't in on Hovind's silly joke.
DNA gets duplicated, splits and rejoins in odd ways, gets deposited by retroviruses, etc. Ferns are notorious for the size of their genome - they can have over 1,000 chromosomes, as compared to our miserable 46. None of this has anything to do with evolution, since humans, ferns and onions are all equally evolved.
I think that jerry is suffering form "little genome complex"! Someone tell him we love him anyway.
Human genes code for an enzyme that works at the temp of the inside of our bodies, as plants, and other cold blooded animals temperature varies a lot they need to make enzymes that work at many different temperatures, and therefore need a longer genome. This is just one example of why genomes lengths vary, and it more or less proves evolution, not disproves it. Jerry S, you loose.
So why are antiquated languages more complicated when compared to modern English? Evolution is not a race to some ultimate goal. Shorter genomes serve a purpose. Most notably the shorter genome of birds is thought to be advantageous by allowing them to have faster metabolisms, which gives them the ability to sustain needed flight for longer periods of time. With evolution, whatever works is what survives. Religion has nothing meaningful to say about this.
Murdock: [colour=red]Even if you were somehow able to "prove" evolution wrong, which I don't see you doing anytime soon. It wouldn't mean that Christianity was right.[colour=red]
For some reason, fundies always assume that there are only two options; evoluytion or fundamentalism. They just don't have the intellectual capacity to count highr than 2.
In that thread, he received 2 pages of answers. All but a few pointed out the flaws in his statements. They defined "theory," they listed sources, they cited the science that proved him wrong, and they even pointed out his religious bigotry.
Out of all that, he chose the one post that pandered to his views and did little but say "yep, he's right, you're all stupid."
Fundies are proof that humans are not at the top of the evolutionary ladder.
This is the best they've got, folks: Bananas and peanut butter and frickin onions. And yes, we all agree it takes a moron to buy into this. I'm hoping it's a gag, but it's tough to tell anymore.
It's not the size of your chromosomes, it's what you do with them.
Mind you, in a match up between Jerry and an onion it's going to end in tears for Jerry. (sorry)
Anyone care to explain to him that we have less chromosomes than a chimp because two of them fused together, yet we both still have around 25,000 genes and that polyploidy isn't a sign of superior evolution.
"The point that I'm trying to make is that if evolution is true, how come our genomes are so short?"
So short as compared to what?
"Any moron should be able to see that Christianity is the one true religion and that the "theory" of evolution is totally false.
Do you agree?"
Well, delightfully, I am not "any moron," nor a moron at all, so I do not agree with your ignorant and stupid assertions.
Most Fundies are extremely ignorant concerning the ToE and science in general. Do you agree?
The length of the geneome has nothing to do with anything.
Also, evolution is a FACT, it is a FACT that species change over time, the THEORY of evolution is a well supported discription of how this happens.
I think Jerry has been sending me all the spam that starts, "Most women are unhappy with the length of their husband's genome..." Seriously, the human genome is over 30,000 genes long, and that's why it took so long to decode it. Varying only 30 of those genes (0.1%) will create enough variations to create every human that's ever been born, without duplications. We share 98% of this genome with chimps, our nearest living relative, and even more with H. neanderthalensis. Evolution is a fact, and if you dicount all theories, then also remember continental drift (earthquakes will be caused by an angry God) and the germ theory of disease (ilnesses are pesilences wrought on sinners by same angry God).
onions have larger genomes because extra genetic material makes plants stronger, while in animals, it makes us weaker (in humans, think trisomy 18 or 21... pretty much every other would kill a person.) So, actually, you can have onion plants with different sized genomes.
Good thing a qualified molecular biologist could clear this out for us.
Oh, right. You're just a moron who found an isolated piece of fact to your own ends.
Plants could have larger genomes to adapt to any change in the enviroment (herbivores, temperature, nutrition) while animals have the universal solution of walking away.
That's just one of hundreds of possible explanations that don't need Babble or Jesus to work out.
Scientific theory = layman's fact
The mutations that caused us, might also have caused the genome to shorten, stupid.
Christianity might well be the one true religion, what does that have to do with anything else? When I pointed out to a colleague that the Quran and the Bible are very similar, she said "Then it must be true!" Or, said I, they had access to the same source text...
Agree to what? This rehashing of old rubbish that have been refuted so many times? No, I don't. When you come up with some new argument, let us know, OK?
You must be related to an onion. You're making me cry.
(Yeah, it's lame, I know. But fundies do bring out the worst in me.)
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
