Quote# 26966

I think it tragic that so many would ignore logic for the sake of a way to explain away God, and yet so many believe a religion like evolution which has more assumptions than fact or science. And Although I do not condone his actions. I think it tragic that a woman gets time served and 60 days for 'involuntary manslaughter' for shooting her minister husband in the back while he sleeps and Hovind gets 10 years......I just don't understand. What kind of a message are we sending to our society?

1 I think it's tragic that so many would ignore facts and logic for the sake of a way to take the Bible as a literal scientific document.

2 Evolution isn't a religion and repeatedly calling it one won't change the fact it isn't.

3 Evolution unlike religion is based on facts and evidence.

4 Hovind got the 10 yrs he deserves.

I sense a bit of msyogany in this post. The women got off easy because manslaughter you don't intend to do it and is an accident. Kent Hovind didn't accidentially stop paying taxes.

Johnny, you seem to be missing the fact that being a member of the clergy no longer grants special privileges... (aside from some tax exemptions)

"I think it tragic that so many would ignore logic for the sake of a way to explain away God..."
Fixed.
"...yet so many believe a religion like evolution..."
I would so love to see these guys try and find anybody that would state "evolution" as their religion when asked.
"...which has more assumptions than fact or science. "
Assumptions? Like what? And how exactly are "assumptions", "facts", and "science"
being defined here? Or "religion", for that matter.

"I think it tragic that a woman gets time served and 60 days for 'involuntary manslaughter' for shooting her minister husband in the back while he sleeps..."
Hm, no identifying info or cite. Dubious. Also, if intent to murder can't be proven, the charge is "involuntary manslaughter". How hard is that to understand?

"What kind of a message are we sending to our society?"
Simple. The message is that the government wants its money. That shouldn't be news to anyone but the most naive.

The message is that the lawmakers aren't as stupid as you, believe it or not.

I think it tragic that so many would ignore logic for the sake of a way to explain away God

Now that's just amazing.

It's when we started applying logic that we realized God was not needed to explain the world.

and yet so many believe a religion like evolution which has more assumptions than fact or science.

What fact or science to you based your own religion on? Heard of the scientific method?

It's more tragic that so many ignore logic for the sake of a way to explain away evolution, yet so many believe there is a giant man with a long white beard who lives on clouds.

This is the message we're sending to society:

1. You break the law, you go to jail.

2. History is based on things that actually happened.

And I'm trying to figure out what judge would classify first-degree murder as "involuntary manslaughter". Methinks someone is bullshitting.

FYI - shooting someone as they sleep is definitely considered malice aforethought where I come from.

The fact the the minister's physical abuse of his wife contributed to the mental problems that led to her shooting him on the spur of the moment were considered mitigating circumstances in the case. In Hovind's case, there were no facts mitigating his deliberate crimes of fraud and tax evasion which he had knowingly carried on for years.

John is *this* close to arguing that Hovind suffered from Battered Taxpayer Syndrome.

I think it tragic that a woman gets time served and 60 days for 'involuntary manslaughter' for shooting her minister husband in the back while he sleeps and Hovind gets 10 years.

The difference is that the woman was being abused daily by her asshole husband, who (following the example of people like Bro. Randy and the Pearls) thought the only way to 'assert his manhood' was to beat up on a woman.
Kent Hovind, on the other hand, didn't want to pay his taxes because he's a greedy, self-serving liar who profits from fooling the rubes. (That would be you.)

My personal opinion is that the judicial system over uses jail as a punishment. Certainly jail is necessary for the person who has committed a violent offense or is a danger to others. But jail time for tax evasion? Yes, let's increase the cost for the tax payer, to guard and house the non-violent non-threatening offender and take them out of the productive workforce. It does not make sense. Kent Hovind should be sentenced to ten years of no publicity, no publishing, no responsibility over others and no businesses. Ten years of cleaning public washrooms would have been much more appropriate.

"Involuntary manslaughter" means that either she was criminally negligent and shot him by accident through gross carelessness, or they thought they'd have a hard time convicting her of murder and did a plea-bargain.

Hovind got 10 years because he not only committed the crime, he persisted in playing games with the legal system, lied, made facetious arguments, went out of his way to cover his tracks and refused (and still refuses) to admit he's subject to the law. He could have avoided the prison sentence by admitting up front that he owed the taxes and striking a deal with the IRS to pay them. He chose not to. When he gets out, it won't surprise me if he just does the same thing again, because he's the kind of person who never admits he's wrong.

I will tell you the message that YOU are sending to society. One, that you don't know how to read and write properly. Second, that you believe that the end justifies the means.

A)It's a tragedy that people look for alternatives to get away with God. However, isn't it more tragic that the only ones who seem to believe in an inerrant Bible have to be thieves and liars?. It's not the fault of society if they don't make their theories believable and consistent.
b)A woman was sentenced to that because she was abused, tortured and beaten by her minister husband. Kent Hovind was a greedy asshole, that's why he's in jail. Or are you really sending a message to society that, as long as you believe in God, you can cheat the system or get special priviledges?. Moreover, are you saying that a woman has to put up with violence in her marriage?
