I read the article, and considering that 59% of all the oil we consume comes from Venezuela and Chavez is threatening to cut us off and open his borders to base terrorism, I agree with Pat on this.

We don't have an extra $200 billion to dislodge another dictator. A carefully placed $1.00 30.06 will do the job just fine.

Well, in other terms, that would be called "Armed Robbery". Doesn't make a good impression internationally. Such an action might give other nations an excuse when they for example develop nuclear weapons...

Still the question remains: What do you do when the venezuelan oil fields are depleted? What next dictator do you want to assassinate then and take their oil?

Would it make more sense to build alternative energy systems and implement energy saving technology NOW? This would make you independent from crazy dictators forever.

I think your 59% number is a bit high.
You get more oil from Canada than from Venezuala, we have (shudder) SOCIALIZED MEDICINE!

By the way, dickwad, it is VENEZUALAN oil, and, if I'm not mistaken they can sell or not sell to whoever they want.

Not taking into account the fact that Saudi Arabia has one of the most oppressive regimes on the planet. Whose Wahhabi clerics (via the Mutawwa) - and directly funded by the House of Saud - rigidly enforce their own hyper-fundie form of Islam, and have given support to Osama bin Laden.
