If you believe that there is no God, life and death becomes meaningless. Without an eternal soul, you are no more than a bunch of molecules, a living mass of material. So according to this godless dogma, squashing a human being is exactly like squashing an ant or a tomato.

So something must be eternal for it to be meaningful? I think it's the opposite. Things are special only because they are temporary and rare.
With your attitude Istvan, why bother doing anything? Why brush your teeth, you'll have to just do it again anyway. Why go to school if you're just going to stop going to school? Why buy a car if it's eventually going to break down?
Obviously those questions are easy to answer, but you can apply the same attitude towards life. Live life just for the sake of living life. Stop worrying about what happens later.

Not quite, because ants and tomatos are actually important to the ecosystem. Human's aren't.
So while I don't need a god to appreciate the value of life, the only reason why you don't walk around, murdering random people is because of the fear of divine retribution?
Ah, feel the Christian Lurve.
No because I can't even bear to look into another person's eyes after hurting their feelings, let alone physically causing them pain. It's not fear of divine retribution, it's a funny thing called empathy.
I seriously wonder, too...who God really looks more kindly on? Those that do good things to suck up to him, or those who do good things for the sake of doing good things...?
Why not just believe in Life?
It's simple and automatic, and you understand immediately that ants and tomatos have their places.
You don't have to tithe, or subject yourself to scriptural poisons. You don't have to waste any time listening to self-righteous babbling fools. You don't have to submit to anyone with a lower IQ than yours.
Above all, you can recognize your own place, which is not far removed from ants and tomatos at all.
'If you believe that there is no God, life and death becomes meaningless..'.
Surely if you believe there is no God, Heaven or eternal 'afterlife' life itself must become infinitely more precious.
If you believe that there is an afterlife, the present life and death become meaningless. With an eternal soul, the present existence is no more than a bunch of molecules, a living mass of material. So according to this godly dogma, squashing a human being is exactly like squashing an ant or a tomato.
In other words, atheists aren't the ones who justify mass infanticide on the ground that the little dears got free passes to Heaven.
You were right up until that last sentence.
Besides, squashing a human being would leave an incredible mess. Haven't you ever played "Eternal Darkness"?
But, paradoxically, people who are lukewarm Christians or atheist, are not in favour of killing so much as militant Christians. Any ideas why?
When there is no God, life becomes more meaningful because there's nothing to depend on after death. You respect life a whole lot more - scarcity creates value. Without eternal life, life itself becomes scarce in comparison.
"If you believe that there is no God, life and death becomes meaningless."
No, YOU believe that. I believe that one creates his/her own meaning for his/her life and that death is simply the end of life.
"Without an eternal soul, you are no more than a bunch of molecules, a living mass of material."
Essentially true except that we are self-aware bunches of molecules.
"So according to this godless dogma, squashing a human being is exactly like squashing an ant or a tomato."
No, we atheists have feelings and ethics, often better ethics than religious persons.
Also, there is no "godless dogma," there is lack of dogma.
Wrong! Wasting tomatoes by squashing them without the intent of making a food product is ALWAYS wrong. Tomatoes are good, nutritious food and should never be wasted. Squashing fundies, however, could conceivably have its time and place. Call me hard-hearted, but I'll take spaghetti over shitheads any day of the week!
Sometimes I'm glad fundies have god. Given all the horrible things they say they'd be doing if they were atheists.
In response to one of the replies, ants and tomatoes are important to the (which?) ecosystem and humans aren't? I'd love to hear the thinking behind that
Another fundie Christian monster with no morals, only fear of God's revenge keeping him from murder and mayhem. Too bad these fundies can't behave out of their intrinsic goodness and concern for their fellow man like atheists. People held in check only by fear of consequences like these fundies are truly scary and not good role models for impressionable youths.
So according to this godless dogma, squashing a human being is exactly like squashing an ant or a tomato.
Maybe if you are an animal rights activist...but most of us don't think that way.
Technically, yes.
You have a point.
You squash ants?
You heartless bastard!
Well, I'm glad you're religious, then. I, on the other hand, have no need for fear of death or punishment nor some outmoded idea of being something "more" to behave myself.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
