[On Scientists]
Why should we want to know WHY they believe it? What if they have some good argument Im not smart enough to think up an argument against? It seems dangerous to listen to them.
Dont get me wrong I love this life and I think its a precious thing. Its the most precious gift God has given us. But who cares if science has made us live longer or made us more knowledgable. In the kingdom of heaven we will know all things and live forever. It seems like a total waste of time to focus on all the stuff we do in this world when we should be focusing on knowing God. Thats why we're here, not to know about history and learn math or know that the earth circles the sun. All that does is make the bible look wrong. Wouldnt we all be better off if we just accepted the answer to everything is that God did it so we can get back to living our lives for Him as He intended?

That doesn't take a scientist, I should think the average Teletubby could manage it!
The real problem with this viewpoint (poe or not), is not that the Esthers of this world want to ignore scientific progress, it's that they want everyone else who doesn't believe that they're going to live forever and know everything in some future fairyland and wants to live a comfortable, healthy, long and curious life now to stop and suffer in silence so that the Estherites don't feel a bit uncomfortable.
If you don't want to learn the lessons of science, tune out, read your Chick tracts and take your 'F'. Hell, you can imagine to yourself you're being persecuted for all I care!
So why did you go to school? Why did you bother to learn how to work a computer, drive or write? If nothing matters, why bother even trying to integrate into society? Oh, you only want to learn things that will directly benefit you and then claim these things are for the glory of the almighty. Esther, your arrogance hurts my head.
You know, this is a funny thing I find. God made the wold, all creation for us, and a thirst for knowledge within...and yet these people refuse to look beyond the surface of anything. Further, they believe this world, and all creation, is just a waiting room for heaven. If that was the case, why did he bother with the complexities, and wonders of this world?
This may be the mother of all fundie quotes.
"What if they have some good argument I'm not smart enough to think up an argument against?"
Scientific arguments are based on evidence if our evidence is stronger than yours, we win.
"But who cares if science has made us live longer or made us more knowledgable."
Sounds like a line from a suicide note.
"That's why we're here, not to know about history and learn math or know that the earth circles the sun."
Ignorance is strength, doubleplusgood!
"All that does is make the bible look wrong."
Reality is a bitch.
"Wouldn't we all be better off if we just accepted to the answer to everything is that God did it so we can get back to living our lives for Him as He intended."
No.
Yeah, what if they have some good argument you can't make some bullshit rationalization against. Damn, they might be presenting the truth and you might have to accept it. One doesn't know whether to bury one's head in the sand or push it up one's ass. What's a poor Fundie to do?
@GigaGuess:
We are programmed with sexual urges, so sex is sinful.
We are naturally curious, so curiosity is bad.
We are designed to love our children, so beating them is holy.
We inherently fear death, so an eternal paradise awaits us on the other side.
We are instinctively creative and supremely inventive, so we must thank God for giving us everything we have.
We are intrinsically communicative and social, so we must suppress all unorthodox ideas and exclude those who hold them.
We are biologically flexible and adaptable, so we must precisely follow a 2000 year old book of fables.
Yup, that fundie god sure is one screwed up a-hole!
"Thats why we're here, not to know about history and learn math or know that the earth circles the sun. All that does is make the bible look wrong."
Since the babble is nothing but horseshit for idiots, that's what happens.
@David
Yeah...that's the truly baffling thing. Fundamentalism right there. God made us, perfect and in his image. So we must fight any and all urges, thoughts, and essentially anything that comes naturally to us. For surely, there's no way that God could have programmed us this way...
Seriously, how can these people honestly be that masochistic?
Yes, but in the meanwhile, be consequent and live in the caves with no computer, electricity and medicine. This way, you won't look, as you at least have been honest enough to admit, stupid.
Esther , I would like to propose to you something I like to call the Reverse Pascal's Wager:
* If you don't believe in an afterlife, and there is no afterlife, you have lost nothing.
* If you DO believe in an afterlife, and there is no afterlife, you will have wasted your entire life preparing for something that never happens.
This is your entire life we're talking about here! Can you afford not to disbelieve?
Sounds like this young lady is at a crossroads, realizing that maybe, just maybe, her whole belief system is actually wrong.
Or not. Maybe she just flunked her exams and is polishing up her alibi before trying it out on her parents.
Either way.
You've got it all backwards. Because God is imaginary, you are wasting your time trying to know something that doesn't exist. Instead, you should be working to make this life, which is all we have, better.
Probably a Poe, but then, this is T4C, so how could we ever actually know?
Half the crap attributed to Bro Fatass would be deemed Poe if it were anyone else...
"But who cares if science has made us live longer or made us more knowledgable. In the kingdom of heaven we will know all things and live forever."
So you advocate euthanasia and the Jonesville and Heaven's Gate solutions?
HAHA! I just read some more. Esther is either a POE or an idiot savant of incredible talent at saying things that expose some of the hypocrisy. She totally leads 'Follower' around. He's constantly making excuses, backpedaling, waffling, etc. and she just keeps putting him in a position where he feels compelled to be either an apologist or spineless. Especially about letting an atheist on the board (when there are quite clearly already a few hahaha).
Genius!
I don't think bringing society to a screeching halt because of an incredibly unproveable afterlife is better for anyone. And if you can't think of a good counterargument, that means you lost and you are convinced by your opponent.
I didn't say it would be easy. I just said it would be the truth - Morpheus.
Miser Spak, above: "This is how muslims think. Look at muslim countries. Do you want to live that way?"
Uh, this is how SOME Muslims think (ok, a lot of Muslims). But far from all of them, and it clearly isn't inherent in Islamic societies, given that they spent the Middle Ages well ahead of European countries in science, math and philosophy. Isn't this site supposed to be about critiquing ignorance, not promoting it?
"I love this life and think its a precious thing. Its the most precious gift God has given to us."
"It seems like a total waste of time to focus on all the stuff we do in this world"
Contradicting yourself much, Esther?
If God made this world, then he must have made it just as it is. It's a wonderful thing, finding out just how intricate and detailed and interlocking everything is.
The god who could figure out that evolution through random mutation and natural selection would be the best way of creating diversity and functionality in Nature, that god must truly be magnificent.
Poe or not, this just goes to further underscore the nihilistic fatalism that surrounds all religions. "Nothing matters... the real world doesn't matter..."
If it doesn't matter so much, an hero. Become one. The Kool Aid's over there.
"Wouldnt we all be better off if we just accepted the answer to everything is that God did it so we can get back to living our lives for Him as He intended?"
Oh HELL No, because we'd be dying from the plague, and barely managing to eek out a living without getting struck by massive famine. Clean water, medicine, and abundant soruces of food are among the many great fruits of the science you would deny. Face it dipshit, just as I am grounded in science, science has become your way of life.
Why should we want to know WHY they believe it? What if they have some good argument Im not smart enough to think up an argument against? It seems dangerous to listen to them.
This sounds Poe-ish to me.
Wouldnt we all be better off if we just accepted the answer to everything is that God did it so we can get back to living our lives for Him as He intended?
Worshipping him through our entire lives?
Who cares if we have computers and combustion engines and the Internet and electricity?
Spending one's life sucking up to a sky-bully sounds like a total waste of time to me...
Do you even have any evidence that He exists?
Besides the Bible, that is, and that is as valid as stating that Dementors exist, because they are in the books about Harry Potter.
"But who cares if science has made us live longer or made us more knowledgable....Wouldnt we all be better off if we just accepted the answer to everything is that God did it so we can get back to living our lives for Him as He intended?"
- ahem, I pretty much prefer living for 80 years (thankfully, though scientific medicine) in a well temperated house with decent plumbing, allways clean water and (due to Refrigerators) fresh food to squating in a cave, and dieing with twenty on a intestinal infection due to half-rotten food and unclean water.
Sure, you are free to live in the stoneage, but don't demand from everyone else to do the same.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
