The mayor of an Arkansas town resigned on Wednesday, claiming he was abducted and brainwashed by Satan worshipers nearly three decades ago.

"It was a double life he had never acknowledged, Williams said, because he didn't even realize it existed until he had recently taken a truth-serum injection."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there some rather enormous problems with truth serums? Like, they can really fuck up your head?
So, he was abducted and brainwashed and, instead of seeking for professional help, he resigns(exactly, what is the link?). Moreover, he was abducted and brainwashed and the only effect is that he's a mayor in Arkansas?. I wish it had happened to me.
Why he took truth-serum is not explained. Moreover, was he brainwashed, did he run away and took a new identity, were they Satanist or he doesn't know?, WTF?. I think that either is a looney or, worse off, he ran away with his misstress and asumed a new identity and, before somebody spill the beans and he has to resign, he makes up this stupid concoction to excuse himself.
This isn't fundie; it's serious mental illness. He's not an idiot -- he's got a very strong delusion because of something going dramatically wrong in his brain.
His illness may not have showed when he was hired, but that's not the fault of the people who hired him, either. Some schizophrenic people can put on fronts for a while. Unfortunately, this one seems to have caught up with him.
I mean really, is that the best he could come up with to explain his way out of leaving his family, being a deadbeat dad and a bigamist?
He's a fundie. He knows perfectly well that saying Satanists brainwashed him is more forgivable than wanting to run out on his wife would be.
This is called a disassociative Fugue (sp?). Sometimes, often due to depression or a traumatic event, a person will just get in a car without warning and leave their lives behind, in kind of a trance-like state. Then they start new lives and new identities, giving themselves a completely fresh start. Through self-deception, they forget everything about their previous lives, in a kind of amnesia.
Brain-washing Satanics are rarely involved.

It's both. Xtian mythology exacerbated his condition by providing a "real" explanation for what he was going through, where someone raised humanist would probably just notice very strange mind states and hopefully get help.
Am I the only one who's not surprised this happened in Arkansas? This sort of thing re-enforces the stereotype of the Confederacy being a bunch of inbred, uneducated dickwads. The callers on shortwave radio shows are nearly always from this area(and Texas, Tennessee, Missouri, Florida) with dumb stories like this or dopey conspiracy theories.
Confused?
