I have to differ with the love the sinner hate the sin folks.
For many years, hundreds of years, certainly in this country public humiliation was enough to keep promiscuity confined to the low lifes where it belongs. Girls refrained from having sex and getting pregnant mostly because of the pressure they were under. What would happen? Their friends would stop being their friends, people would whisper when she passed. Small children would be led away. She would be a pariah. She would be sent away to have her baby that would then be put up for adoption unless her family was gracious enough to claim it as the mother's. The consequences of casual sex were devastating and immediate. They also worked. They worked quite well. Boys would be expelled from school their friend's parents would not longer allow their children to associate with such a bad influence. Entire families were forced to uproot and move away. Sometimes, if they were old enough, they were just pushed into marriage whether they wanted it or not.
Consequences. Not consequences of being loved and coddled through a tough time but serious consesquences. It did more than all the sex ed classes in the world. We should go back to those days, not the compassionate, understanding, enableing that we have today.

"We should go back to those days, not the compassionate, understanding, enableing that we have today."
And that about sums up your position right there.
Sadly, you don't view that as a bad thing.
Actually, premarital sex settled America. Trappers and miners were almost all men. Midwest farmer's daughters who "shamed" their families were put on the next train west, where they often worked as saloon girls till they married.
Well, in the public humiliation stakes, it's nice to see Kathy practising what she preaches anyway.
Don't hold back, guys and gals, Kathy's big on consequences so will appreciate that we are only trying to prevent her from spreading more of her stupid crap around.
"I have to differ with the love the sinner hate the sin folks ."
So you differ with your own God/holy book?
(KJV) Jude 1 : 21-23
21 - keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
22 - And on some have compassion, making a distinction;
23 - but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
Teen pregnancy peaked in the fifties. Shame didn't stop girls from having sex, it just made their families send them away for a few months so they could pretend nothing had happened.
The same thing happens in fundie churches now, when mothers put dark glasses and big scarves on their daughters for when they walk into the abortion clinic.
It never ceases to amaze me how many Fundies think the words of Jesus are written in red because they are forbiden.
That must be the explanation for why they try so hard to prove they have never read them.
I think we need to find a happy medium.
Educate people that teen pregnancy ruins lives and short-circuits potential while making sure that they aren't coddled (given special scholarships, hand-outs/tax breaks/incentives to breed), but also seeing to it that they aren't pariahs, or disallowed basic survival needs like food and shelter.
I think real sex education is really the best beginning, along with free condoms in school and easy access to birth control and abortion. If that fails, though, they need to accept the consequences, not be given everything they would have had if they had behaved responsibly.
Don't demonize sex. Just don't stymie the natural consequences of irresponsibility and stupidity either.
Kathy30 is a miserable guilty human, probably attributable to her religion. She wants everyone else to be guilty and miserable, whether they belong to her religion or not.
No compassion for you, bitch! Suffer in silence!
"Girls refrained from having sex and getting pregnant mostly because of the pressure they were under."
Someone's never heard of back-alley abortions, shotgun weddings or sending pregnant girls to "stay with relatives", I see.
Yeah, and, we should also go back to surgery that involves tar, sawdust and screaming... and, you know, manual labour for everything and slavery and riding horses to get around and none of this crap where boats have motors!
Cos we did that for hundreds of years and people were obviously better for it!
"I yearn for the good old days that only existed in my imagination."
Society has always had those problems. The difference is, now we've got the guts to face them out in the open.
Do you people like anything or anyone...I mean, other than your self-righteous group?
Why don't you just mind your own damned business.
Uh, no. Kids still fucked; they just hid it better. The statistics show 90-95% of people (at least in the US, and presumably the figures don't differ drastically for the other Westernized countries) have had premarital sex over the course of the last century, and I see no reason to assume that the figures were significantly different in the 19th century or before.
I have a book, A Midwife's Diary, (Story of Martha Ballard) which is exerpts from a midwife who kept a log back in the late 1700-early 1800s. Many of the women delivered babies either shortly after marriage or, outside marriage. So, no, even the colonials weren't saving themselves for marriage.
public humiliation was enough to keep promiscuity confined to the low lifes where it belongs.
Actually, everyone else just hid it better.

No such luck. Social taboos have never kept anyone from getting pregnant at any point in history, no matter what social class they belonged to. Many Puritan girls got pregnant before they were married, but a blind eye was turned, so long as the boy married her before the baby was born. And if puritan society couldn't damp sex drives, no other culture could.
Sex outside marriage is a recent phenomenon, largely attributable to the ACLU.
Oh, and none of that damned compassion and understanding crap if you're a True Christian.
What Would Fundies Do? : "We should go back to those days, not the compassionate, understanding, enabling that we have today."
What Would Jesus Do? : "So when they continued asking him, he [Jesus] lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her ... When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
So basically, put your child thru hell if she has the same needs as every human being since the dawn of our species? Perhaps you'll do the same when she has the audacity to eat and get hungry.
Also, numbers say you lie, so fuck off about your implied result. People fuck. People have been fucking FOREVER, long before marriage was even invented. So don't be such a fucktard. Breeders breed, that's the thing about heterosexuality.
Everything you have said is a lie, Kathy. You have no compassion for your fellow human beings, and no understanding of human nature. You are a deceitful sociopath hiding behind a thin facade of christianity. May you never, ever have children.
Yes, those days where, paradoxically, teen pregnancy was rampant and poverty was rampant too. Nice combination.
Yup, because no noble-men have ever been promiscuous! No, siree!
Girls were raped by powerful men, and sent away to have the children in secret and given up for adoption.
Teenagers had sex back then too, and there are natural ways to not get pregnant which work at least half of the times. Only very puritan societies work like you state. In most normal societies, the young woman went away "to visit an aunt" and came back half a year later with no dire consequences. Everyone knew where she'd been, but as it was kept quiet, no-one cared much, as they had probably done the same things too, when they were young.
All the sex ed classes in the world reduce the number of unwanted kids, and the number of desperate women killing themselves, and the number of people forced into loveless marriages because they did a stupid thing at one time. Today's world is much more human-friendly. We should NOT go back to those days.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
