Quote# 327

[Proof that some people simply shouldn't be armchair linguists]

The word 'god' means 'good'.
To sin means to consciously and deliberately do something not good.

The two terms are contradictory. God cannot sin.

God means deity, that is, imaginary man in the sky, applying to various religions.

Good means man's perception of what is pleasing and nice.

Sin is a label for acts that the christians/religious folk don't like. Sin is also known as 'fun'.

Armchair linguistics is great fun, but nearly always wrong -- in this case, magnificently so.

On the etymology of the word "God" (as of the Oxford English Dictionary):

The exact etymology is disputed. The roots seem to be found in old sanskrit of the indo-european linguistic family, meaning either "Something which is invoked" or "To offer sacrifice to". There is absolutely no connection with the concept of "good".

In my humble opinion, the first root gives another nice hint on what "God" really is: A concept of magical thinking. A thing you try to conjure by performing magic rituals. A human concept, invented in a feeble attempt to control the world.

I agree. God is by definition good.

Is your god the one that condemns millions/billions of people to eternal torture in hell for not believing in him? This would occur despite the fact that many of these souls have never even heard of him. If that is your god, then he is NOT good. He is a creation of your imagination and a reflection on what you are.

Do not give me that old "original sin" excuse. The idea is that a person is condemned to hell for the disobedience of a distant ancestor. That idea is the essence of "not good". It is evil in its very concept. It can not come from a good deity. Therefore your deity is evil.

If there is a god out there he/she is good or he is an evil trickster. Take your pick. At this point the conservative "Christians" have picked the evil trickster. The very choice reflects more on them than on any purported god.

Never say 'BB is ungood.' and all that jazz? You change three or four words in 1984 they'd take it as a constitution for Utopia.

Swede

Old Norse might be the word good, not God.
In modern Swedish the word for good is "god" and the word for God is "Gud".
