Quote# 33095

Your moral conscience tells you that God and the state should execute people who express their greed through shoplifting. You know that shoplifters deserve death -- and more than death, they deserve to have God lay an infinite curse upon them.

Dakota Bob

I should have thought about that before I stole beer from the shop.....

Thou shalt not kill, bitch. And what about 'an eye for an eye' or 'turn the other cheek'?

Zonny The Lazoon

"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment that you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get." Matthew 7:1-2

Why do you not follow the teachings of your own religion, Ceridwen?

Does anybody know that Ceridwen was a Welsh goddess who used magic in Celtic mythology? *smirk*

Not even in the most retrograde of societies shoplifters are condemned to death. Why?, because even in Babylon and contemporary Palestine, they applied the rule of an eye for an eye, etc...............and now, you introduce the notion of PROPORTIONAL PUNISHMENT. And Thomas Moore went beyond in his utopia. If you kill people for minor crimes, killings will rise as a consequence. After all, what do they have to lose?. If what you mean is that anyone who has done the minimal infraction should be put to death and cursed, the world would have ended long ago.

Oh, and shoplifting is not necessarily greed. What about people who have to steal to survive? Christianity is supposed to be all about compassion and love, especially to the poor.

Killing criminals does not stop crime, either as a deterrent or by removing criminals from society so they can't reoffend.

Execution doesn't work as a deterrent because anyone who commits a crime does it thinking they wont be caught, or (well known phenomenon) doesn't think any further than carrying out the crime itself anyway. Some don't even care if they get caught. This one is a no-brainer, and statistics support it. The only way to make deterrence work would be to make policing 100% efficient (which would require, say, two to three policemen per citizen), which is impractical, and also to make sure nobody is dumb enough to think they wont get caught even if there is 100% effectiveness, which is bloody impossible given the general stupidity of a colossal proportion of society.

Execution doesn't work by removing criminals from society because all criminals were previously perfectly law abiding for some finite period after their birth. In order for execution of criminals to halt crime, you would also have to prevent any further births (impossible) and maintain total social stasis (also impossible) so that everyone who currently isn't a criminal doesn't encounter some new incentive to become one.

Since neither deterrence nor prevention of reoffence by removal are valid justifications for execution, what do we have left but the concept of justice, which is basically a more acceptable name for revenge (for this reason, I always feel uneasy when I hear people calling for "justice"). Is satisfaction of vengeful citizen's bloodlust and hatred, without actually improving society in any way with regard to reducing crime and maintaining fairness and order, sufficient justification for the state to murder people? And let's be honest here, how could killing only in the name of vengeance be called anything but murder?

The law should be a matter of enforcing fairness and protecting rights. The law should not be a matter of revenge. If a right has been lost and can be restored, go for it in the name of fairness. If a right is irretrievably lost, taking the same right from others just makes the net situation worse.

Your moral conscience tells you that God and the state should execute people who express Christianity. You know that Christians deserve death -- and more than death, they deserve to have God lay an infinite curse upon them.

See what I've done? See how well this doesn't work?

it sickens me that this harpie carries a Welsh name. DIAF bitch

Mister Spak

My moral concience tells me the state should execute fundies.

1/2/2008 11:57:58 AM

Caustic Gnostic

If that's what "your" "moral conscience" is telling you, and if that is your solution to shoplifting, I would suggest the penalty for demagoguery. To wit, rip out the preacher's tongue, and crush both hands.

As far as the infinite curse goes, people like you are its agents. The world would be better without you, so please kill yourself.

Have yet to determine whether Ceridwen is for real or a dedicated Poe. Shit like this pushes the meter further toward Poe.

My, isn't Christianity a religion of caring and compassionate love for all mankind.

1/2/2008 12:36:24 PM

The State should not have the right to execute anyone. Look at how wrong they have been with so many things! Anyway, whatever happened to "God's merciful forgiveness?" He loves you and he'll drop you in burning oil and cut out your tongue if you don't believe it!

1/2/2008 12:59:31 PM

Hmm. Try moving to Iran.

Another Fundie that has lost the right to complain about how hardline Islam is.

1/2/2008 1:54:06 PM

My moral conscience tells me no such thing.
My moral conscience would rather see a punishment that is more proportional to the crime.
