Without God, the baby [David's son, killed by God in 2 Samuel 12:13-19] wouldn't have been alive in the first place. Killing David wouldn't have taught David a lesson (how can you learn a lesson when you're dead?). Showing the effect his sins has on those he loves would and did teach him a lesson. The death of your beloved child is much more likely to change your ways than your own death.
