My attitude towards science is very much one of mistrust, contempt and fear. Man had many comforts of faith in the past, such as geocentrism and special creationism, and science has done all to violate those shrines. I concede heliocentrism and evolution, but I will not let science touch God and the afterlife. If science says there is no God and no afterlife, then science can go to hell.

And when Science goes to Hell, Hell will be terraformed and landscaped, thereby becoming a high-tech paradise. The lake o'fire (TM)will be used for geothermal
generation to power the distilleries, nightclubs, and brothels.
Science can do this! Shit, Science has contributed more toward the betterment of humanity than any stupid god.
So, you're not worried about science being misapplied, you're worried about it definitively showing you that something you believe is wrong?
Why, again, should I have to respect religious beliefs merely because someone holds them?
My attitude torwards religion is very much one of mistrust, contempt and fear. Man has many comforts of knowledge now, such as astrophysics and special relativity, and religion does as much as possible to go LALALALALA. I concede people are dumb and like to handwave that which they cannot understand and therefor fear, but I will not let religion touch education and the minds of the young. If religion wants to brainwash the young with their "God" and "afterlife", then religion can get stuffed.
@Bowen: Those are already there. We just need to build a stripper showroom and a geothermal beer powerplant and refinery. I mean, if the FSM didn't want us to think and invent, he wouldn't have given us brains.
science has done nothing but violate your cosy little bubble of ignorance from the past. it never stopped your children from dying of common illnesses, it never gave you a car, it never gave you lights to see by, it never gave you a computer on which you can type this...
you're right, emotional! science is a crock! hand me that big book o'myths!
So essentially what you're saying is that you know we're right but you don't want it to go any further -- you like having your head in the sand.
Too bad. Science is not terribly concerned with people's comfort levels (except when that's the subject under study) and goes as far down the rabbit hole as it needs to to get the answer. You want to stay on the surface, fine, but don't begrudge others their explorations; it makes you look like a fool.
> If science says there is no God and no afterlife, then science can go to hell.
Science doesn't say that -- common sense says it.
And you should be glad that it does. It saves you having to give up on heliocentrism and evolution.
Haha. If science says there's no hell, well, it can just go there! Neener neener neener <<razzberries>> Harrumph.
@ Puck, Bowen
This puts a little spin on Hank Jr.'s "There's a devil in the bottle" , maybe like the worm in the tequila bottle?
And Oh! I do hope there will be breweries; maybe Arrogant Bastard Ale.
Science hasn't worked towards violating those shrines, silly; that's just side-effects from following the evidence. Science isn't saying "there is no God and no afterlife", it's merely ignoring gods and afterlives, as there is no evidence for any of the deities nor for any afterlife stories.
Science doesn't SAY that, you moron. And thankfully, science deals with the NATURAL world (you know, things we can PROVE because we have EVIDENCE) not your supernatural mythical sky-pixie, for which there is NO evidence.
It's up to the likes of you to PROVE he exists, not us to prove he doesn't.
"geocentrism and special creationism, and science has done all to violate those shrines. "
Geocentrism and special creationism are "shrines"? Shrines to ignorance.
"Look! I am the center of EVERYTHING! Everything revolves around ME! See how ignorant I am!"
Thankfully science has been dismissing such ignorance with knowledge for the last several centuries.
"but I will not let science touch God and the afterlife."
Good, because science doesn't deal with supernatural, non-provable things. Now go tell all of your fundie idiots that religion shouldn't be taught in public school science classes.
Science doesn't say there is no god or no afterlife, science is waiting for you to provide evidence that these things exist. When you do, we will consider them. Oh, for science to "go to hell", where is it, exactly? You've been there, yes? So you know where it is? Why don't you show us?
Nah, I let this guy have a pass. At least he isn't denying scientific facts. Accepting evolution is ok with me. Not really a fundie if he does not look at the evidence and denies it.
Technically, science has not disproved an afterlife so this guy isn't a fundie because he is going on evidence at least.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
