He's got it partly right. Religions, especially extreme ones, have historically been against the principles of democracy. Personally, I'll take democracy over religion every time.

Now I'm all for more Latin in the world, it's kind of a hobby of mine but I think this person needs to have a quick read through of 1 Samuel 8 and find out what his God really thinks of kings and dictators. I believe it's something along the lines of: "Well you can turn away from the elected council if you 'really' want to but Kings aren't nearly as much fun as you're hoping".

It shocks you that the Church wouldn't support a system that would toss them out on their "Holy" asses? Likely there would have been lynch mobs waiting to point out all the hypocrisy, errors in judgment and tyrannical rules they were guilty of.
It's easy to go condemning everyone and everything while you sit in an ivory tower, snuggly protected from the retribution of those decrees I would think.
