And that's how you lampshade all the problems that come of following the religion that started as God Of the Gaps (or Gog) and God of the fear and death.
6.000 years ago:
Man (tribes chief): I'm sick, my women keep dying during childbirth and this is mine third kid that got killed by wild beasts. And, to top it off, food got scarce after the drought started and lighting had burned our storage. There's no chance all of us are going to make it. Remind me again, why do I keep feeding you?
Priest: I'm your envoy, your connection to God. He is not pleased with our sins and is punishing us with disease and famine.
Man: God? I have seen no God. All I have seen is bullshit happening all around us and I can't do anything to stop it.
Priest: He is real. That's why he is punishing us. He is right there, in the heaven, in sky where no man can come, using lightning and thunder to hide rain from us, and disease and beasts to punish us further. Only the sacrifice will please him.
Man: Sure. We have that old sheep, it stopped giving milk and looks like it will die any minute. We could use some meat to lift our spirits.
Priest: No, that wouldn't work. He needs human sacrifice. An innocent child, that doesn't contribute.
Man: Sure thing. You have the most, we'll use one of yours.
Priest: No. The god forbids it. Smith's child would be better.
Man: Little Jogo? But he's still an infant. I can see that he doesn't contribute, but still...
Priest: Not Jogo. The other one, his older brother (to himself: that called me shiny baldhead yesterday). He'll be more pleasing to the god.
Man: But he's twelve and is smith's apprentice he sure is more usefull than your...
Priest: Silence! The god has spoken!
Fast forward to today.
God is not at the sky anymore, since we own it. We cure diseases that were deadly once. Most of the births happen without complications. We deal with drought with irrigation and import (or transportation if you like). And yet, humans are still afraid of dying and would pay anything to avoid it.
