Some Christians call themselves “fundamentalists” to strongly identify with the fundamentals of Christianity–that everyone is sinful and the only hope is to accept Christ’s death as payment for sin.

But the news media started using the them “fundamentalist” to refer to Muslims that commit murder in the name of Islam. Why? Because the media hate Christians. They lump them in with Muslim Jihadis to generate guilt by association.

First of all, to self-identify as a 'fundamentalist" is not a good thing. It means you are ignorant, can't or won't think for yourself, can't tell fantasy from reality, and have absolutely no sense of metaphor, analogy, or parable. It is something of intelligent people would be ashamed to be called.

Secondly, you don't have a trademark or copyright on the word "fundamentalist." Hell, you don't even know what the word really means...if you did, you'd be insulted when somebody called you that (see above). There are tons of free dictionaries on the web...avail yourself of one.

And third, there is absolutely NO difference between the Christian fundie mindset and the Muslim fundie mindset. You both seem to think that anyone who doesn't share your particular set of beliefs is an enemy who persecutes you, and you therefore have the right to use just about any means at your disposal to retaliate.

You're sick fucking control freaks, the whole lot of you.

Fundamentalism is EXACTLY the same nature on both sides. What you see objectionable about their fundamentalism is precisely what is objectionable about your own. Not so pretty, is it? (Of course, they're just as bad at evaluating themselves relative to you. Neither of you wants to claim the other as kin, but you're far more alike than unalike.)

And where do you get the idea that "the media hate Christians"? These are the same media that, not so long ago, featured two Christians and a Jew having a roundtable discussion about atheists (entirely negative, of course).

Every newspaper has a religion page or section; you find only a few with regular science sections, and NONE with even a single page devoted to atheism per se. Every Sunday morning, every other channel on TV and every other station on the radio carries worship services. Heck, there are a number of TV channels and radio stations that broadcast religious material 24/7. There have been a number of popular TV drama series with a highly religious focus or that have been strongly faith-friendly ("Highway to Heaven," "Touched by an Angel," "Promised Land," "Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye," "Miracles," "Tru Calling," etc.), as well as Christian talking-head programs such as "The 700 Club"; ditto for movies, but I can't think of a single one supporting atheism, or even being particularly critical of Christianity. Many TV and radio stations carry short promotional messages from local churches or national church organizations (which I am pretty sure are usually free public service announcements, not paid ads). And EVERY documentary that deals with the Bible's historicity gives less than a minute to any skeptical point of view, spending the rest of the hour on completely credulous speculation and a slavering verbal equivalent of interpretive dance to give the impression that the Bible's stories are, beyond question, rooted in fact. 9_9

And you think "the media hate Christians"? Dude, if you can't see how much in the spotlight you are, it's because you are already blinded by it.

Strip away the paranoia and he's not completely wrong.

Fundamentalism as a religious description (from the latin for 'from the foundation') goes back to 1920s Baptists, particularly William Jennings Bryan. But as early as 1955, the Times newspaper was reporting "[Fundamentalism] appears to describe the bigoted rejection of all Biblical criticism [...] and an excessively literalist interpretation of scripture."

The term started to be associated with similar 'back to basics' movements of other religions, and was first applied to Islam in 1957.

Islamic fundamentalism was so named because it shared the narrow-minded, bigoted intolerance of its Christian cousin. So, in fact, it was Islam which was being sullied by association, with Christianity.

But the news media started using the them "American" to refer to people living in the States and committing murder. Why? Because the media hate America. They lump Americans in with hoodlum murderers to generate guilt by association.

Christian fundies:
Thinks homosexuality is a sin.
All women should wear modest dress than don't show much.
Wants to destroy Islam and most other heathens.
Dreams of nuking the Middle East (except Israel).
Wants the USA to become a theological fortress.
Very very liberal with the electric chair.
Abortion is against God's teachings.
Evolution is a lie.

Muslim fundies:
Thinks homosexuality is a sin.

Here's an example of Christian fundamentalism:
