All governments. Read your Bible, please...it saves a lot of questions.

Fine. So if you get a government that supports civil partnerships for gay people, women's rights, the removal of creationism from the science curriculum, etc, you'll accept it as God's will and won't whinge and moan about it? Glad to hear it!
how about dictatorships, Monarchies, anarchists, ....
Is not the Pope appointed by God, and I think he defines you lot as heretics. So you must be doing the devils work. No "rupture" for you.
fundamentalists delenda est
That's right, Floating Axe, stifle any attempts at discussion.
Or maybe you just don't actually know the answer to the question, so you are using 'read the Bible' as an excuse.
As far as I recall, there isn't any discussion on God appointing governments in the New Testament.
As for the Tanakh (that's the Old Testament for you goyim *grin*) most of the 'appointed' leaders are shown as having screwed up big time.
And let's not get started on the historical divine right of Christian kings in Europe.
SoI guess the moral is, it doesn't matter whether God factors into the equation or not, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Including Communist ones?, China, for example?. And just a question, what about governments like those of Hitler or the present Iranian one?. And the best for the end, aren't we all sinners?.
A few things
Render onto Caesar what is his. Render onto God which is his. Keep separate (Jesus)
When we mix church and state one will, inevitably, corrupt the other.
Last time we did here in the states people were burned at the stake
In Europe people burned at the stake but also went through many other tortures.
@SweetViolet,@Tempus,@deathbird:
Romans 13:1-7 (NIV), "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor."
Yup, God (through Paul) said that every government in the world is doing his bidding. Worth remembering next time someone trots out the "Atheism is bad, look at Stalin's Russia!" line.
Ask 'em who they think put Stalin in power in the first place?
Ooh, just thought of something...
Romans 13:2, "Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted."
And Americans have the gall to call themselves a Christian country?!
Hah, have your 'leaders' prostrate themselves before the holy throne of Queen Elizabeth and just maybe we'll let you back into the United Kingdom. Then maybe God will forgive your foolish rebellion!
;-)
I guess Bush was doing the devil's work by overthrowing a God-instituted government in Iraq.
But wait - that would mean he was wrong, and that's not possible either.
"Read your Bible, please...it saves a lot of questions. "
God hates questions. You go to hell if you ask questions.
Therefore, God approves of communist governments.
And now, let's watch FA's head explode.
The "divine right of kings" never made it into the US Constitution. Simply put, officially, the US gov't was designed to ignore dogma in favor of reality.
Dump your bible, please...it has no bearing on modern governments. In case you hadn't noticed, the vast majority of the real world's population have graduated from bronze-age thinking. Either get with the program, or crawl back under your rock.
Ok.
I appoint Conner as Dictator-for-life, and myself as Head Tiger.
Since all governments have divine right, I command that for the justice of God, Maruchan Ramen pay us a tithe of chicken-flavored ramen, and not the shit-flavor I've been getting lately. The kind that doesn't taste like chicken.
I also decree that all tanning salons, booths, etc. must be immediately destroyed and any company that manufactures tanning goop disbanded...
So the US had absolutely no right to bring down Hussein because he was put into power by God? And here I thought the CIA had done that.
And by this theory we should all be still under Papal rule, since it was revolution and revolts that loosened that.
By the way, most Atheists have read the bible more than any of your ilk.
Romans 13:1-7
Ah, this old chestnut. The verse that gave me the first nudge down the slope into atheistic depravity.
Never mind about Hitler and Stalin, what about the Roman leaders who persecuted Christians? Or the treatment of Christians under the Ottoman Empire? What exactly was God thinking when he unleashed that shitstorm on his beloved followers? And don't suggest "test of faith" because it won't wash. All that suggests is that God thought "Well, they're following Me alright... I wonder how far I can push them? In with the lions!"
There was a world before the bible and there'll be a world after the bible. It's just a damn book, you don't see Ringers telling us to accept Frodo Baggins as our lord and savior, but maybe in a couple hundred years they will !
Hail Sauron!
Vlad the Impaler, Tamerlane, Attila, and Ivan the Terrible were God's appointed rulers? Yeah, right!! Have a nice day!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
