How is it that there are so many happy, joyous, and fufilled nuns in the world? These women have given up freedom, possessions, children, and marraige, and yet, they are joyful... Does this speak to any athiests in support of the existence of God? If not, to what do you attribute their happiness?

I have lived in a hostel run by nuns, and most of them were the most fucked up dried up nasty spiteful women imaginable. Read about the magdalene houses and catholic orphanges in ireland to learn about how cruel and horrible these women can be. In one experiment in the 60s psychotherapists went into a convent and encouraged the nuns to talk abouth their feelings. All their repressed sexuality came out, some became lesbian , hundreds petitioned the vatican to be released from their vows. In the end all that were left were a lesbian hardcore.

No, it only shows that some people have a deep belief in God. We already know that, you idiot.
However, it does nothing whatsoever to advance the case for God actually existing.
Like priests, many Nuns leave the order, like priests, many remain locked into their faith or knowing nothing else. It's not like a devotion to a pastoral life actually prepares you for the real world.
They have given up servitude to a man, the physical and mental burden of childbirth and -rearing, the worry about possessions, and they have their own freedom. They have a purpose in their lives which they feel is worthwhile. I, as an atheist, have no problem with that, at all. I have more of a problem with people who SAY they are religious, and try to force their religion onto others, while only following the tidbits that THEY like.
Gemma, have you sold all your possessions and given the money to the poor yet? Why not; Jesus told you to.
