[In response to: Last week, the University of Virginia's student paper, The Cavalier Daily, ran a cartoon depicting a naked man smoking a cigarette in bed. Standing beside the bed, a woman in her underwear buttons up her shirt and asks, "Come on God, be honest - Did you really get a vasectomy? I can't let Joseph find out about this." The man replies, "Well, Mary, you're f***ed."]
Locally, are there a hate crime laws that can be applied?

Oh, comeon, MrMannn, the cartoon is, IMO, not only not witty, it is not even funny. You can not possibly be really offended by stupidity.

Hate crime? If you think that every stupid cartoon is a symbol of hate against Christianity then I'm not sure how you've survived this long.
The only thing to say in his favour is that they would have never dared to print a cartoon about Islam, a religion that seems to view them as the greatest enemy of mankind.
A hate crime, also known as a bias crime, is a criminal offense committed against a person, property, or society that is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin.
Sorry, a cartoon doesn't qualify.
Well, fair is fair. You fundtards keep insulting atheists and other non-Christians. Sort of gives us the right to insult you back.
You really have no clue as to what a hate crime is do you? Maybe I should send you a dictionary so you can look it up.
If the rapture is imminent (as you all say it is) I wouldn't get caught up in litigation if I were you, MrMann. Besides, I can't imagine how this is a hate crime.
As a gay man I've probably come closer to experiencing a hate crime than you or any of your insufferably arrogant, self-righteous, sanctimonious, brainwashing, wife-beating, kid-fucking, delusional, fundie asshole friends ever will.
Go have some cheese with your whine and STFU!
Well, Mrmannn, if you're all that offended by something you saw, it's your duty to pluck out your own eyeball, as ordered in Matthew 18:9. Here, I'll even lend you an icepick.
What's better is that elsewhere on the forum, they're talking about the overreaction of Osama bin Laden in regards to the Danish cartoon.
When I read both threads, I LOL-ed. Hypocrisy much?
Hate crime?
I don't think it's really attacking Christianity, so probably not.
You do have every right to mock agnostics and atheists, but if you're going to do that, I demand a copy, since I love comics.
The cartoon was neither clever nor humorous. That said, help a homeless person, contribute something to the local library, plant flowers in the median, visit a senior citizens' home. In brief, get a life, you insufferable whiner.
You think it's a hate crime to joke about fictional characters? I appreciate you concern but I don't see how Mary is a victim of a hate crime given that she doesn't-
Oh wait, that's not what you meant...
Hate crimes is if somebody came up and punched you in the nose just for being a Christian. Note this does not include if you won't shut up about the fucking rapture, and they finally get sick of it (under the right Judge, that might even be self defense).
It also does not include making stupid little cartoons about Mary. Seriously at least they included God in the cartoon, instead of the next door neighbour.
Talking about burning every mosque from here to Mecca and back?
Justified.
Talking about pushing scientists into their artificial black holes?
A-OK!
A bad religious joke?
HATECRIMEHATECRIMEHATECRIMEHATECRIMEHATECRIMEPERSECYOOSHUN!
Hate crime laws don't work that way.
And they are similar... because they are basically the same religion with a different name for the one god. One of them will have to explain to me why the Creator finds so much amusement in creating several religions then having them murder one another.
I like how they have no idea what a hate crime actually is. And I love how a few other people are like, 'Yes, hate crime laws must apply here! Because obviously this is a hateful comic~!'
Some people can't take a joke...
1. Something has to be a crime to be a hate crime. It can't just be mocking a religion--it has to be something that would be a crime anyway and has the added element of hate.
2. First Amendment, bitch. Because this cartoon is not directly threatening Christians or inciting violence against them, just mocking their mythology, it's perfectly legal, if tasteless.
3. Go ahead. Riot in the streets. Burn the newspapers. I want to see you people prove EXACTLY HOW MUCH like the Muslim fundies you are.
4. Oh and people who want to see religion parodied a bit more effectively need to watch Dogma. Just throwing that out there.
They stole my joke!
