You dicked it up by suggesting Jesus wanted people to sell their possessions...
which of course, means you're one of those anti-free market, bleeding-heart, disingenuous LIBERALS... so very ready to give of everyone else's time, money and effort...spouting off how the rest of us should do this, should feel that way...etc.
But, to the point...Jesus actually admonished the disciples NOT to sell their possessions and give to the poor... when he cited "the poor you have with you always".
Even Jesus recognized that poverty was a vicious cycle for which other people's money would do nothing to cure or stop.
Get your shit str8 next time Jesus (Hay-soos)

Luke 14:33
Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Money.
Matthew 19:21-24
Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
Acts 2:44-45
All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.
Um yeah...this kinda proves that evangelical assholes don't read their own bible.
selling things = anti-free-market
Jesus wants you to have stuff because poor people can suck it
Religion is just really confusing for me.
@ haywood:
That pic fucking owns.
Jesus dicked up your blitherings by saying people should sell their possessions which of course means you're one of those CONSERVETARDS ... so very ready to throw widows and orphans into the street if they refuse to be rich...etc.
But to the point...when you start ranting about what Jesus said...get your shit str8 about what Jesus actually said.
As a student studying political ideology I can definitely say that liberals, whether classical or modern, are not anti-free market. In fact, early liberals were the biggest proponents of that economic system.
Of course fundie politics just consists of themselves thinking they're right and everyone else in the world is absolutely wrong.
Yeah Joe Bob, not much else to say. This is just more proof that if anyone completely (and in terms of their social control, effectively) opposes the actual teachings of Jesus, it's the asshole fundies. This isn't the first time I've read this brand of psychopathology-disguised-as-religion, but it's unusually clear in its meaning and intent.
Must have those springs strapped to your feet because you are making a pretty giant leap there, anonymous poster.
You're doing it with such respect for others too; I'm sure Jesus is proud of your fucked up interpretation of his message.
Jesus actually admonished the disciples NOT to sell their possessions and give to the poor... when he cited "the poor you have with you always".
No, Jesus often admonished the disciples to sell their possessions and give to the poor in various other passages. In this passage, he admonished the disciples for criticizing the woman for anointing him with an expensive oil prior to his execution (which he foresaw). The moral was not that one should be stingy, but that one should not criticize someone's kindness to a dying man.
What's the definition of a Christian?
Someone who knows exactly how you ought to live.

Always capable to pick and choose parts of the babble to claim whatever you like.
Jesus said a lot of things. Hey, the Bible hasn't exactly won any awards for consistency.
Why do they capitalize Liberals like its some kind of accusation?
And yet it is the poor whom Jesus called blessed in his Beatitudes, not the rich.
And what was the parable of the sheep and the goats about, then? "I was hungry and you did not give me food, I was thirsty and you did not give me drink, etc."
And what is wrong with being a "bleeding heart?" I am so sick of this phrase being used as an insult. I'd rather have a bleeding heart than a cold, hard one like yours any day.
So to love Jeebus is this same as the only way to be a good American: buy, buy, buy, buy, buy, spend, spend, spend, spend, spend?
No thanks.
Wasn't it a split between James (possible brother of Jesus) and Paul. James said that to get into heaven you needed faith and charity (I think it's one of those apocryphal gospels).
Paul realized this wasn't going to make for a popular or powerful faith, so he declared that faith alone was needed to get into heaven.
I thought charity was abig part of that 'Christian luv.'
@Irreal:
yet Paul says in Corinthians (II, 13, I believe) "Now there abideth faith, hope, and charity; these three. Yet the greatest of these is Charity".
Today in that same R&R, this post:
"I'm not the first or second poster about this, but I will point out some things BOTH of you are wrong about....perhaps...
Luke 14...give up everything he has (translation in the Aramaic...in this case refers to employment, family AND goods..Jesus is speaking about the willingness to do so in order to be His disciple, he is NOT commanding it). If he did, all Christians would have been poor, no original church would have been established, etc. Jesus above all never cited anything against common sense.
Matthew 6... He's admonishing people not to become a slave to money...DUH...? How do you get sell it all and give it to the poor from this?
Matthew 19...He is speaking to ONE man, who obviously has a problem with the Matthew 6 scripture..this is not a suggestion that all do it, He's making an example of ONE man. And also, you'll notice He told him to sell his possessions and 'give to the poor'...He never actually even said give it ALL to the poor, but this particular rich man was so in love with his possessions, he considered it unthinkable to give even a slight bit to the poor.
Acts 2....CLEARLY you can see the 'proviso' about THIS scripture...Jesus is condoning the camaraderie, community and care for the Believers. He is instituting the practice of the church helping its own first. Additionally, you will see that He never says 'all' their possessions and goods here. Also, the Aramaic for 'goods' here indicates "those things created or made to be sold, as in financial sustenance'...WOW!! Jesus was condoning working and/or making things to sell...to PAY YOUR OWN WAY!! Wow!
LOL
I have noticed in my Strong's and my Heathrow's Concordances that the Bible speaks to giving to the poor 67 times. It refers to 'selling, etc. and giving to the poor' 11 times. It tells people HOW to handle their possessions (not sell them) or how to enjoy the bounty of God...871 times.
I'm not so certain God's attention was on His people becoming poverty-stricken to do anything. He's much more interested in His relationship with us and making certain something stupid like a BMW or a TV doesn't come between us and Him...I mean since His Son did pay the ultimate price to ensure we could return to a relationship with Him in the first place...
it's all in CONTEXT guys...BOTH of you."
When Jesus said "feed the poor", he was meaning "don't feed the poor".
I though ha was a dude, not some shitty stereotype of woman.
Confused?
