I had a friend many years ago that was a brilliant man; not the most socially gifted, but brilliant nonetheless. He very much enjoyed reading. I remember there was hardly a time that he didn't have a book in his hand. Unfortunately one day he was riding his bike to work, and guess what he was doing while he was riding his bike. He was reading a book. Because his focus was not on what mattered most, he didn't notice when his bike veered out into traffic and he was struck and killed instantly by an 18 wheeler.
I bring this up simply to point out that these learned individuals have buried their heads in their atomic level books while all the while the sands in the hourglass of their lives are methodically running out. How irrelevant will a technology breakthrough be for them if the cost is their soul?

So uh... you're saying that because your friend did something incredibly stupid and dangerous, science is bad?
That's a stupid fucking conclusion.
Not so much fundy. It's still a leap of logic though.
Riding a bike while reading is stupid. That's why I, and millions of other avid bikers, don't do it. Neither do the people who read regularly read wile biking.
science is evil,it killed my friend
yeah he was reading a book while riding a bike, and went into traffic, but it was sciences fault!
why do i get the feeling that if it were a bible he was reading kalanaka would be praising jesus for bringing him home early for being such a great bible reader
smells like lying for jesus to me.
Even if it is the truth, it may have been a V.C. Andrews book. To these fundies anyone who reads anything is brilliant. "OMG you read a novel? A REAL novel? ALL the WAY THROUGH? One with no pictures? Good golly you must be absolutely brilliant."
It doesn't take much for these guys to think that you're brilliant, a pulse will be sufficient evidence in some cases.
"I bring this up simply to point out that these learned individuals have buried their heads in their atomic level books [...]"
What the hell is an "atomic level book"? How would you even read such a thing?
"while all the while the sands in the hourglass of their lives are methodically running out. How irrelevant will a technology breakthrough be for them if the cost is their soul?"
Their breakthrough may not aid them much personally but others far into the future can benefit from it. Simply because you may or may not get any use from something doesn't mean you shouldn't bother with it.
Funny how well this works as an analogy for you RR folks if you replace the word "book" with "Bible"...
Though, I guess in your case, you guys would just be sitting in the middle of the road, waiting for the cars to come...because doing anything else would be too futile in your eyes...
Driving or riding a bike while reading anything is stupid. Care to guess how many car drivers have cakked it from trying to read a road map while driving?
Takes you death obsessed Rapture Ready Retards to make is something 'religious'.
I have my doubts about this anecdote.
Mostly because I've tried reading while bicycling, and it's really hard.
We must bring a horrible end to these technologies called 'bikes' and 'books' they obviously bring naught by trouble.
Additionally, it's easily to call bullshit on this because no brilliant person would associate with the RR stock.
You shouldn't read, or be distracted, while riding a bike. Easy to understand, and you don't have to use religion to prove it.
I don't get where he makes the connection between the soul and life.
So this guy died... and lost his soul because he died?
Well you can fuck your chances of going to heaven, then?
I love 'atomic level books' it just screams, 'I'm using big important sounding words I don't understand in order to sound intelligent'.
Oh and the image of somebody reading a fucking book while cycling is so ridiculous. I don't care how dumb you are, that's not even possible. It's like letting yourself fall completely flat on your face without moving your arms at all. Your body just wont let you.
Lying for Jesus is still lying.
And isn't even the bible made of atoms? Or is it made out of some magical material that only fundies can see.
nevermind, I don't want to hear the answer
I've made it to 40 years of age with the majority of my personal, private time being spent reading books.
I have maintained a marriage, a family relationship, a job, and a life, without getting killed by anything I didn't see coming.
I guess I am an anomaly who actually pays attention to reality.
Nice anecdote. Completely made up, I'd wager. Fits the "lesson" too well. Besides, it starts off with, "I had a friend...." Right off the bat I knew this was a lie. :p
If this guy was as brilliant as this douche says he was, then he wouldn't have been riding while on a bike, regardless of how much he loved reading.
I nominate this for the "Lying for Jesus" award.
How the Jimminy do you read a book and bike at the same time? I've been trying to, never managed the trick. Yeesh. just 'cause yer "friend"* is an idiot doesn't mean all folks who read are. And what, all people who are brilliant are... stupid? Probably not to well adjusted to outside life, I'll reckon, but not exactly an idiot.
* In this case, most likely a person you invented to drive you point home, as incredibly bluntly as possible.
I'm not sure in what sense technology would cost a person their soul. I can't think of any instances where this has been the case. It certainly wasn't with your friend in your story; he just lost his life .
And say, for example, that the cure for cancer was discovered and cost the discoverer his/her soul. How incredibly RELEVANT would that cure be for the billions of others from that point on who have or will get cancer?
How irrelevant will a technology breakthrough be for them if the cost is their soul?
If I found the cure for cancer and it cost me my soul... Then I could live with that, and die with it on my conscious.
Very appropriate, kalanaka. You've created fiction to promote fiction.
PS. "Thou shalt not bear false witness" does not carry the proviso: "unless the ends justify the means."
I thought people were supposed to die? or is death some kind of punishment now?
If he had a friend like you, he didnt need enemies, you obviously have no compassion.
my first hunchis this story is alie, imagine that.
so my question is, where you riding with him or where you the one hitting him? I dont see how you would know that he had been reading a book.
How made up IS this story?
I can't think of ANYONE who would ride a bike reading. And how convenient that he goes into traffic and is instantly killed by an 18 wheeler.
Lying for Jebus at it's finest.
Confused?
