People are equal in dignity. Cultures are not equal. Would you say Nazism equal to islam (I would)?
Christianity, i.e. the Catholic Church, invinted the Hospital, University, Human Rights, International Law and the modern scientific method. Check out a book called How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization.

And also look for the sequel
"Into the New Dark Ages".
Due out never, as the pagan practice of writing has been abolished.
Didn't Islam have hospitals and universities while Europe was in the middle of the Dark Ages. And no, the Church did not invent human rights. In fact it's been a long time opponent of human rights. How can people who are members of a church that has a known history of torture, prejudice, and censoring and then claim said church invented human rights? What the fuck is wrong with you? Are you this blind?
Uhh, no. The catholic empire tried to prevent hospitals (leeches, prayers, and healing smoke was enough as medicine) and universities (they wanted all the knowledge kept to themselves, because educated people figure out lies a lot quicker), and flat out denounced just about all scientific discoveries as heresy, until they could figure out a way to use it for themselves.
Fail, Fail Fail!
And the Chinese and Japanese had nothing, right? What about the Hindu's, Islam (saved a lot of knowledge from complete destruction), the Greeks, Romans, etc.
""Christianity, i.e. the Catholic Church, invinted the Hospital, University, Human Rights, International Law and the modern scientific method.""
Lying for Jeebus is still lying.
Um, people are not equal in dignity though race, creed, and culture all have individual pros and cons. Case in point, Christianity breeds pathological liars. In fact, thedavidwilson is wrong about the Catholic Church "invinting" any of those things.
The "modern scientific method" has it's documented historical roots in ancient Greece, though one could argue that the first people to master fire grasped the concept. The rest are mostly Eastern "invintions" and all predate the Bible by many centuries.
I can pass off the crazy fundies with a laugh, but, the ones who gleefully lie in the name of their Faith really piss me off.
Um, I always thought it was either the Greeks or the Egyptians who first came up with the hospital concept. I know they both had excellent medical knowledge -- especially the Egyptians. Google "Imhotep"+"medicine".
University -- also the Greeks, I believe.
Human Rights? Yeah, and your religion isn't already responsible for the oppression and deaths of millions.
International Law? What the hell does Christianity have to do with I.L.?
And the modern scientific ::snrk:: method?? ::giggling:: Are you serious? ::laughing hysterically::
First step: consult an encyclopedia. Look up cultures, religions, and politic movements
Second step: read a world history textbook.
Third step: understand and comprehend what you've just read.
Ask your questions.
In fact, the Chinese, Greeks, Romans and Arabs were well ahead in the field of medicine. I don't think you can include the Catholic Church and "Human Rights" in the same sentence without including the words "disregard for". The International Law that most Western Countries utilise is a form of Greco-Roman Law. Ah, the famous Catholic scientific method,,,, Kill the Heretic!!! I couldn't find the book you refer to,,,, but I don't frequent the fantasy section of the library, so I may have missed it.
Hospitals: no we didn't
University: no we didn't
Human Rights, International Laws: no we didn't... and no the right to commit genocide in the name of religion is not part of Human Rights and it is illegal under International Law
Modern scientific method: no we didn't... and praying to god doesnt normally work... he kinda likes to watch us suffer...
But we are very good at torturing... hey can we demonstrate it on you? it is a catholic thing to do you know...
@WMDKitty: "International Law? What the hell does Christianity have to do with I.L.?"
Well, International Law proper first emerged from the Peace of Westphalia and the break-up of the Holy Roman Empire... so it can be said that International Law's birth was one of the many triumphs of secular power over religious power.
On an unrelated note, I love the quote (though I've forgotten who said it): "The Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire". Truckload of fail
Actually, the Moors (Muslims; those practicing Islam) had hospitals and universities and medical knowledge long before the catholic church gave up their ideas that these things were about magic and sorcery and would not allow them.
Read a book. You might learn something truthful about the history of the world.
People are equal in dignity. Cultures are not equal. Would you say Nazism equal to islam (I would)?
Indeed. Nazism's love of catholicsm is extremely similar to Islam... OH WAIT!
Christianity, i.e. the Catholic Church, invinted the Hospital,
The hospital was invented by the Catholic order of knights called the Knights Hospitaller. However prior to that there were buildings that did the same job. They are called apothecaries and physicians. And they were invented by every civilisation. The earliest two listings of individuals are Aesculpius (physician) and Sushsuratha (surgeon). Sushuratha wrote down the principles of surgery (we use them still today) nearly 3000 years before western medicine adopted them (i.e cleanliness, sterilisation, anaesthesia). Aesculpius and Hippocrates's methods are still used to this day. None of these dudes were christian.
Human rights. Again quite a few other countries had basic human rights. One can point out Hindu cultures for "freedom of religion".
International Law. Err... This was drawn up by a coalition of countries that included islamic nations.
Mordern Scientific method was discovered by the Islamic scientists of their golden age too. And by scholars of different culture... One may point out the socratic method as an early version of the scientific method...
University, Human Rights, International Law and the modern scientific method. Check out a book called How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization.
No, cultures are not equal. That's why they evolve from theocracies to secular nations(and Nazism was far worse than Islam. At least the latter tolerated the people of Book, whereas the former killed 6 million of one)
The Catholic church invented hospitals?!? Is that why doctors take the Hippocratic Oath? It couldn't be because of Hippocrates, "the father of medicine".
The ancient Greeks had all of those things, and the church destroyed most of it as pagan heresy. Read a history book!
Catholics in the Middle Ages WERE proponents of Universities.
However, the "Universities" they created were all, well, Catholic Universities. Once a student had passed the Trivium and the Quadrivium, the highest calling he could hope to aim for would be a Doctor of Theology.
Did any of you read that book that is referenced?
The concept of a hospital, a place to care for sick people, was invented during the crusades by the religious order of the Hospitallers, hence the name hospital. This place was free to anyone who could not pay and catered to the many pilgrims that went to the holy land.
The university WAS invented by the Catholic Church. In ancient greece/rome there was no single place where many people went to learn about a variety of subjects and exchange ideas. During the early middle ages the Catholic Church set up schools associated with the cathedrals. These turned into the Universities. Examples are Oxford and Paris University. If you obtained a degree from a university with a papal mandate you could teach at any other university.
Human rights -- The idea that people in general have basic human rights was promoted by the catholic church in the 1500's. The Dominicans, on an island now called the Dominican Republic, argued that the Spanish plantation owners should not be treating the natives harshly. This led to the idea that every person has certain basic rights. This also led to the idea of international; i.e. other countries and their citizens have rights and should be protected under a basic set of laws.
Modern science was born under Catholic Patronage. Many of the early astronomers were Catholic. Ever heard of Mendel, the guy who discovered genetics? He was a Catholic Monk.
Your ignorance and hatred are astounding.
"Nobody expected the Spanish Inquisition would have been Catholic invention!"
Actually it was not. It was a SPANISH invention, hence the name. It was a policy of spain to root out folks who were trying to undermine the state, including muslims who were just kicked out after occupying spain. By our standards they went about it wrong but that behavior was acceptable to people at that time, including the highly cultures muslims. It was the pope at the time who tried to curb the tactics of the Spanish.
Do you know how many people on average who were killed each year throughout the entire Spanish inquisition? About 12. Some muslim states execute more people than this each year today for apostasy.
How in Satan's name did the freaking catholic church invent the scientific method?? I'm fairly certain all they invented was the christian method, which goes like this:
1. Read the bible
2. Believe it blindly
3. Evidence is evil
4. Donate to the church
5. ????
6. PROFIT!
Why are you comparing islam to nazism? one is a religious belief and the other is a government system, it's like comparing watermelons to steam boats. Centralized medical care is much older than Christianity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hospital . I's true universities in WESTERN EUROPE were mostly funded and part of the catholic church, but there are also independent examples of such institutions in other places such as the Hanlin Academy from the 700s AD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University . Human rights weren't estrablished by catholics, since they were the ones categorizing humans by castes, races and ethnicities in the first place. Check out the wikipedia article on it, where examples of basic human rights were established during the 200s BC in India http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights . International law, as a strict concept wasn't available anywhere until the 20th century when most governments were already secular.
The Catholic Church and Christianity in general have been a HINDRANCE to progress and science since they came around. Ever heard of the dark ages? Western civilization went titties up for several centuries because of the Catholic Church calling all the shots.
Sure TDW, and you can read "What Islam Did for Us!", "Lost History: The Enduring Legacy of Muslim Scientists, Thinkers and Artists", and "The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization"
Betcha feel real bad about dissing Islam now that you've read about all the good things it's done, right?
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
