QUESTION FOR ALL

I have been to a few weddings lately were God is completely absent from the ceremony. The Bride/Groom do not want God, Christianity, or any form of religion mentioned in anyway. They want a strictly secular, practically atheistic ceremony.

The question is: Does God view these marriages as "legit"? Is the couple REALLY Married in Gods eyes? Are they living in a constant state of adultery even though they made a vow to honor and love each other forever? What about marriages in other religious traditions? Do Islamic, Buddhist, etc marriages "count" in God's eyes, or are they null & void when it comes down to it.

My Wife and I were just curious

(and yes, we got married in a Church)

My husband and I got married in a church too, and our wedding ceremony was non-denominational. Who cares if it's legit in God's eyes? It's legit in our eyes, the eyes of our families, and the government's. That's all that matters.

Going strictly off of what's posted here, I'm not sure this is particularly "fundie." It would be a valid topic for theological debate, if you're into that sort of thing.

Just my POV: the question in and of itself is not particularly fundie, but I'd wager a lot of possible responses will be.

Why don't we just leave it to the bride and groom, shall we? They're the ones pledging themselves to each other, after all. It's really no one else's business - including your fantasy deity.

And, if they are both of age, only the government needs to recognize the legitimacy of the contract. All others are extra.

I'm not atheist, and I'm nowhere near of claiming to be a christian. But if and when I ever do get married, I'd want a secular wedding as well. Marriage as someone has stated in an earlier post is a business arrangement. Always has and always will be. That's why they have prenumptual agreements.

Why would they care? If they chose to be married without any mention of god or religion it was pretty obviously a conscious choice and they couldn't give a flying fuck if god thinks it counts or not.

I'm on of 'em. I was married outside a barn, at an outdoor historical museum. I was married by a non-denominational pastor - and that was simply concession to my in-laws - who mentioned god once, if I am not mistaken; the ceremony was written and chosen by us so we were able to control the content. The only prayer in the entire 20 minute ceremony was an Apache (heathens) wedding prayer.

And, I am as married as they come. If god doesn't like it, it's his problem, not mine.

Let's see. Whether I get married in a Buddhist temple (realistic option) or an Icelandic fjord (ideal option), as long as I have a valid marriage contract I really don't care whether God recognises it or not.

The Bible says nothing about marriage "in the sight of God". It offers no definition one way or another about what marriage is or isn't - it just assumes people know what it is. Eve is described as Adam's "wife" (Gen. 2:25). Who "married" them?

The idea of marriage as something that has to be done "before God", or in a church, or in front of some sort of priest or pastor, or in accordance with some religious ritual, was an invention of the Roman Catholic church. It's been carried forward into other Christian denominations.

Your God was actually very pragmatic about the whole marriage situation. Recognizing even polygamist marriages performed outside of the "christian" tradition. It seems your God defers (in many cases) to secular authorities in the matter of marriage. Which is something one would expect of a wise and all-knowing God who flat out opposes divorce. That means (in the eyes of God) Bhuddist marriages are fully married. Muslim marriages are fully married and even same-sex marriages are fully married in the eyes of your God. This is something fundies fail to understand. Its not your business who marries whom and for what reason.
